but green grass is so much nicer. I'm with you, brown grass is so much easier to look after

Yes and that needs to change. You don't eat grass, watering your vegetables is fine.

But if you water the grass you only have to cut it. Let it turn brown & save the effort.

Agreed , my grass is mostly moss anyway so I'm happy for that to die away.

But For the curtain twitchers around here , I've some quite expensive young plants so I'll be watering those regardless.

In one of droughts in the 80s or 90s when there was a hosepipe ban, Anglian Water were using an aircraft to spot people with green lawns and then prosecuting them for watering their lawns. One chap had a perfect defence, his lawn was brown but he had developed a green dye to make withered grass look green. He was found not guilty and the sales of his dye soared as the result of the publicity.

Seems a bit of a faff , far easier to tell the nosey bastards to feck off .

Hardly surprising.

The day after the water went off and we got the email asking us to be sensible I walked my dog in the morning and evening passing the same house. A lady was out there watering her flowers with a hose pipe on both occasions, why not have a water butt? the flowers don't care about getting clean or rainwater. Why waste pristine, treated water on flowers?

Also saw someone washing their car with a hosepipe, it was a white car so I expect they have to do that a lot.

The people over the back let their kids play around with a hosepipe squirting it in the air everywhere for fun :ohno: Keep having to run and get my washing in off the line as they are doing it most days and it's coming over the fence , and the parents sit there watching them!

We don't even own a hosepipe, I keep going out and watering my plants with bits of water left over in the washing up bowl, trying to do my bit to save supplies running dry. Everyone seems to have hot tubs and paddling pools around here as well . They must be using quite a bit.

Someone on the 'Next Door' forum on our estate messaged them the other day and apparently the reply was 'Really sorry but we're seeing record levels of demand and even though we are working flat out, water's being used as soon as we can pump it through. That's leading to low pressure and no supply but it'll be sorted once usage falls'

And someone else tonight got ' Cause identified 31 May 2020 17.26 Due to high demand during this hot weather period, customers may experience intermittent supply interuptions'

Those that have water...Please stop using those bloody hose pipes for hours !

Have you not considered complaining?

I swear, we filled it weeks ago.

why not have a water butt?

To be fair it’s not always viable. We’d have to completely regutter to make it work (and I did try to make it work but the butt is now round the side collecting dust) as none of our gutters drain anywhere that would work for a butt to feed off

I don't use one as I don't water any plants. But those that can use one would reduce usage enough.

Of course another issue is when you build a load of new housing estates you'll increase demand?

Are you suggesting that maybe local infrastructure should actually be taken into account when building new housing? Especially housing that will be purchased by those more likely to grow flowers and maintain a nice garden as it statistically is something more likely to occur if you’re a higher earner able to afford a new build in the 200k bracket?

Preposterous.

There isn't a hosepipe ban in place so that's probably why people are still using one.

Someone did mention though that if it's a problem, they should complain however I'm not sure the water company would be able to help.

Me , if its causing a problem I'm only to happy to discuss it personally if it's an issue.

It can usually be done, somehow - the old blue wheelie bin, seen in the distance behind the lamp that's not on, is fed from the gutter of the shed that the picture is taken from. There's about seventy feet of 15mm plastic water pipe connecting it to two other butts adjacent to the shed and arranged to be at the same level. I would suspect that it's been in operation, without any problems, for about eight years. I did think that the interconnector pipe might block at some point, but we haven't got to that point yet.

I do wonder if there is an intentional drop to the supply volumes being made available, to reduce the rate at which people are able to use it..?
