What you pay for collection is for normal rubbish. It doesn't include garden collection...View attachment 8716
So.... if they don’t have a legal requirement to collect garden rubbish free of charge, then why haven’t they charged us since the collection service started? Surely it would have been better to introduce the charge at the outset.

It definitely smells of Veolia wanting more money to me.

I don't believe there is. its been discouraged in the past as the garden waste was composted and sold instead of costing in the form of landfill tax.

Compost heaps is what our parents would have had before the brown bins came in. Time to use one again?

I maintain that councils do have a legal requirement to collect garden waste as, by definition, it is general household waste. What councils don't have to do is provide a separate garden waste collection. If you look at the small print of those councils that have ceased their free garden waste collections, you'll find reference to the fact that you are allowed to put it in with your general waste.

As an example here's a link to neighbouring Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council's scheme: https://www.newcastle-staffs.gov.uk...g-and-waste/garden-waste-subscription-service
If you have space in your rubbish bin, you can also put garden waste in that.

That's what I was getting at above.

It's a sad state of affairs, but progress isn't always forwards.

Stafford BC have provided a Free garden waste service? Really...

Back in the day ALL household rubbish went into 1 bin, this included garden waste (but No hot Ashes) and was taken away with no issues. (No stickers/labels in those days)

Then SBC issued all residents with 3 bins and Required us to do the recycling, with our Garden waste being separated and put in the Brown bin provided. (No mention of a New Free Garden Waste Service)

Clearly someone found a loop hole which has led to Councils being able to state this was a ‘Free Service‘, which they now have to charge us for!

It's less than a quid a week and you can always double up with a neighbour (if you have no shame in asking for £18 off them....

It's something that the council have been slow to implement compared to the rest of the country.

So am I correct in thinking that someone with a small garden - and consequently a small amount of garden waste - can just bung it in their green coloured bin ?

In the majority of cases, my brown bin mainly consists of leaves and general tree detritus from the two very large trees situated on the street right outside my property. Despite numerous requests for the trees to be pollarded (they haven't been in over three years) the said trees are actually over hanging my house roof.

In recent days, this has caused leaves to fill up my drain via a downpipe and flood my side *extension. (*Although It's not a liveable area, it's still a permanent build where I keep a lot of equipment.)

Not only that, but there are also the additional hourly drop offs from the pigeons that currently 'adorn' my car, walls, pathway and garden from my tree neighbours.
