if its 'proper pubs' youre after, then the spittal brook is also pretty good in a traditional way. its a bit out the town, but good place to hook up with yer mates.
Yes, but the Spittal Brook's not the same since Pete Turner left.
He was treated terribly by Punch.

Esprei is next door to Joxer's. Used to be Satchmo's / Bar Utopia / Baristas / have I missed any?

Jamesb: Is the open mike in the Grapes still run along the lines of "we'll let you have a go for one song if we know you, as long as you don't mind us playing along"?

I went to the open mike in the Star and Garter. See you next week, everyone. :)
It was originally opened as a restaurant named Waltons by Ron Roestenburg who soon realised that there was more money to be made from turning rural wet led pubs into food orientated pubs.

Tried to get into the Greyhound, walked straight past it 1st time! and then found the door either stuck or locked....perhaps they saw me coming!!, about 1pm that was.

Checked out Joxer Bradys, bit quiet but was lunchtime, seems OK, Wetherspoons (is that an old cinema?), they are all pretty much of a muchness. And then the one opposite w/spoons across the river with the terrace, friendly place, but forget the name.

Gonna check out the Grapes for open jam night later tonight. Still *not* found a pool table, I know there is a rileys, but I reckon pubs are best for pool and making conversation.

So if anybody in the Grapes tonight sees a straw chewin' wurzel, yodelling at the bar with a strongbow in one hand and pipe in the other, please say hello!
I think the doors of the Greyhound are sometimes locked around the end of visiting time across the road.

13 years ago, when the post you replied to was made, the Greyhound used to keep the County Road door locked much of the time, with access restricted to the Sash Street door only. In recent years both doors have remained open during opening hours. It should also be remembered that they don't open at lunchtime in the early part of the week (or at any other time at the moment).

But, in all the years I've been going in there, I can't ever recall the doors being closed because of 'visiting time across the road'.

Zylo,
A reply after thirteen years isn't necessarily any less relevant than one after thirteen days.

Maybe not, but when the thread hasn't been touched for so long, do you not think there's a reason for that?
Talk about raising the dead!

A thread might not have been touched for so long because too many people have overlooked it.
Now can we please get back to the subject of the best pub in Stafford ?
I suggest the Railway.

Railway a decent little boozer. Always used to reckon on The Coach on Millbank when Jed kept it. Went downhill rapidly when he retired.

I think I mentioned that I used the Coach and Horses most when Ray till kept it.
It's not a bad pub now though, a decent pint of Wadworths 6X for £2, a beer garden and friendlier than the Picture House across the river.

Let me guess - last time you were in the Coach was, let’s say, errrr 2006?

I try and avoid the place now, but visited a lot back then as my auntie (Pat) was married to Rob. In fact I've watched more fights outside while sat in the Nepalese opposite than had actual visits in the last decade!

The nearest to a fight I've seen in the Coach and Horses was a seriously heated political discussion during the miner's strike.
Since then I've taken beer across the road to have with a meal in Nishads.
For Nepalese food now it has to be the Morris Man.

I think the first 3 times I visited Ayo Gorkhali with hooperman we saw a fight spill out from the coach!

Well times change from 13 years ago, and you've bumped a old thread people may not noticed and see pubs that don't even exist and think, oooh i'll try there then!

You've obviously searched the forums for this topic, instead of making one yourself which would of been much better, but as you've got a attitude i'll leave you to it.

P.S coach n horses a good pub? All I heard was there was a load of drugs in there, I guess they was wrong/making up rubbish.

Zylo,
But why make a new topic when there's already a perfectly good one already here ?
And what do you mean by "you've got a attitude"?
