Holidays 2020

We stayed in a lodge at a campsite about a mile out of Lynton called Sunny Lyn holiday park. It had hard standings for campers and there was a good thai restaurant and brewery just along the road.
I did look at that this morning and it looks lovely, and another one, Hele Valley nearer to Ilfracombe.
Both are booked up for the dates I’m looking at.

We’ve decided that we may not go to Spain in September, just not sure how much fun it would be when we got there so toying with the idea of motorhoming instead.

Used to love Ilfracombe, especially the little museum on the front with the 2 headed cat in!
We only discovered Ilfracombe in the latter years of having son and our dog, and found all the establishments we visited welcomed us in and were surprised we even asked if we were allowed to go in with an under 18 year old and a well behaved dog , never mind welcome in there all night. A really friendly and welcoming resort and wishing we had discovered it years earlier!

Just returned from a short trip up to Scotland - wasn't really a holiday as we met the owner of the house we're buying and sorted some contract clauses!

But while we were there we did have time for some lovely walks!

@kyoto49 Very much recommend a visit to Cullen - lovely seaside town! I counted FIVE antiques shops plus the usual gifty places! There is a fab coastal path which leads to the most beautiful beach!

Also worth mentioning we saw DOLPHINS!! First time I've ever seen them in the wild - we watched them from the van window dipping and diving along the horizon!

Thank you so much. We weren't planning venturing that far east on this trip but will make a special effort to now :)

On another note - there is a tourist scenic road that runs along the east coast.

It is NOT worth going along - it's not very exciting and the towns / villages are pretty grim!

Your best off working your way down / up through Aviemore which is beautiful!

People who have driven to the Scottish Highlands, can I pick your brain on stop over spots please? I'm thinking Stirling for 2 nights on the way north, but what about going south? We will be leaving from the North of skye for the trek home. Ideally somewhere interesting where we can have a walk to see the countryside and get a feel for the place for a couple of nights rather than a mere travelodge next to the motorway!

Crieff hydro hotel makes a nice relaxing break to recuperate after the long drive north and you awake fully refreshed to continue exploring.

Don't stay in Carlisle on the way back though as most of the hotels are pretty dire.

If you're prepared to go into a city I think Edinburgh is one of the best in the UK. I was a student there for 3 years and visited a couple of years ago, staying in Portobello at the time (about 4 miles outside the centre.) The city centre is very open and spacious and there are good walks in Holyrood Park including a spectacular view from a rocky crag called Arthur's Seat.

Not been to Edinburgh since I was 8 or 9, really should have a visit.

Off to Wales tomorrow for a bit, the caravan will need some attention after this amount of time empty.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Home to pack the RV tomorrow ready for the off on our hols Wednesday. Decided 10 days ago that it really wouldn't be a good idea to head down to Provence as we would normally do in the summer for a month or so due to the current excitement.

Decided on Scotland and after much searching and emailing finally found a nice place by Loch Ness that meets our somewhat particular requirements (space for a 37 foot RV with space at the side for a car in a trailer, black and grey water tank facilities via pipe into tanks, electric hook up).

Looking forward to it now, though can't say I'm particularly looking forward to the drive up.

When I was a student we used to perform an all out assault on Rose Street. This runs parallel to Princess Street and back then was just pub after pub, (two years ago I noticed it had become much more 'trendy' with bistros and outdoor cafes.) The idea was to pub crawl the entire length having a pint in each pub. I don't think I ever made it, although I did notice when I last visited some stains near the end of the street that I'm pretty sure I made back in the day.

Then we'd stagger home down Leith Walk having bought a haggis supper in the famous Deepsea Chipshop (still there !!!)

The next day I would sit looking into the guts of a faulty radar trying to find a deliberately introduced fault (what's known as 'shit or bust' teaching) wondering why my brain appeared to be oozing out of my ears.

I miss the sixties. :pint::buddy::barf::barf:

Bob,

I remember the Rose Street Brewery, previously the White Cockade, from April 1984.

That weekend in Bennet’s Bar three visitors from the south got talking to me, we exchanged details and I was invited to parties in Bristol twice a year. As if to suggest that it’s a small world not only did the daughter of one of them, Sarah, attend the same course at the same university as my daughter but another, Mel, moved to the west Midlands and I attended his funeral at Stafford Crem last year.

It’s friendships like that, not just beer, that proper pubs are for.

Does anyone have any recommendations for lovely campsites near Formby, walking distance to the beach?

We’ve never been but we’ve heard good things about it from a few people so we thought we’d pop over for a few nights.
I can’t find anything online so wondering if there are any hidden gems out there.

The campsite must have fully serviced pitches.
