Rugby Club progress...

Almost certainly a dumb question, but is the rug club in operation?
I was wondering that (and whether the lights were still in use in the evening).

The advice our American Football team received last week (Friday 13th), was that group contact was not allowed i.e. games, training, classroom sessions and staff meetings. The latter two were allowed provided it was delivered remotely (which is perfectly feasible as we're a university team). But the only physical stuff allowed was gym work provided it conformed to the gym's regs - obviously this has now been banned.

It meant the curtailment of our season - the league was at the semi-final stage of the play-offs - and I imagine the abandonment of all the summer leagues.

The rugby club is closed for the foreseeable future. We made that decision on Monday. Our members are working with the House of Bread food bank making deliveries.
We have approached the local residents association to see if we can help in any way - we have a wide membership so we can assist with food deliveries, prescription pick ups and domestic jobs for anyone in need.
We may not be in the location people wanted, we have been round this a hundred times but mark my words we will step up in this unprecedented time.
We are after all, a community facility and we have started to help in any way we can.
It’s stay well, stay positive, stay well time

It's a time to pull together and it's great to see organisations such as yours rising to the occasion.

Tim I (for what it's worth!) commend you for hanging in here, despite making 'fau pa's' over the years, I have not faced the hostility that it has been your misfortune to be subjected to. Some people believe strongly that the club should not have been built where it is, I am one of them. The flood lights 'issue' have not helped that, "Understatement!". However the new club is, imo impressive in many ways, and the work they are doing with the community is impressive. OK a cynical response might be this is merely good PR. It may be, but should we disregard it because we believe it is?

Thank you. I’ll be the first to admit that there have been issues, it’s been a challenge moving into the club with not much of a handover on how some of the systems work.
Criticism.....I’m pretty think skinned, so I don’t lose sleep over it!
We host two amazing charities FOC, why.....because it’s the right thing to do, they needed a permanent home which we provide and they are the most fantastic people.
In the last years alone members have raised c£30K for charities going 3 day / 290 mile bike rides, running full & half marathons and doing the 3 peak challenge.

Most people won’t know that because it’s not a PR exercise. Having been at the top of Ben Nevis in -10c temp & 65mph winds and staggered 26 miles, I can think of far easier ways to get a bit of PR!
We will do whatever we can over these coming months, exceptionally challenging times ahead. We all need to do our bit, and we will do ours.

Tim did you play a season for GEC St Leonards 20 ish years ago? If so, we may have played together! I was the skinny winger who despite a decent turn of pace, had doubtful hands, and wasn't the best tackler! :ohno:

Enjoying a drop of red.
Took these pics earlier today as I thought I'd take a look on my way back from work. I'm delighted that the good and bountiful Lord Stafford, so desperate to move the Rugby Club from its then current location to Doxey Marshes, has continued with the development of the old club with the same pace and vigour.

It would have been disgraceful if he had let it go to ruin and left an open invitation to every druggy and wino in the borough to have free and easy access to it as hundreds of children walk past it twice a day on their way too and from school.

I note they had the new floodlights frying Doxey marshes again last week.

Due to a global pandemic, peace broke out all over the shire......for 6 months people looked out for one another, trivial arguments became what they are.....trivial.....until some bright spark just couldn’t resist commenting about the bloody floodlights!
Floodlights that comply with all planning and environmental requirements, have been tested and tested again by the way.....but some people, it’s never enough!
Oh, before you start, the fire at the old place, nothing to do with us!

So you're saying the floodlights weren't on, beaming over the marshes? Still, it's comforting to know that the fire at the old place was nothing to do with you.

No, what I am saying is that we are well within our rights to have them on (What’s the point in having them otherwise?) and they comply with all planning and environmental stipulations. We upgraded, at our our expense, to LED lights - one of the reasons for that is that LED lights reduce light spill. They don’t ‘beam out over the marshes’.

Did you ever look into spill guards? most manufacturers of flood lights provide them as an option

Are you saying that I can stand anywhere on the SSIS and no illumination from the floodlights will reach me?
