Just received an email to say I'm still furloughed til further notice. This is looking increasingly like I won't go back, so seems odd to keep me furloughed now it costs them?

Whilst I've enjoyed the time off my wallet is feeling the reduction in wages :(

Are you allowed to look for another job whilst furloughed?

Nothing stopping me I guess, I'm treated exactly as if I'm working other than the not actually working bit! I really like my job, and if it still exists I'd want to go back, but as our main customers only reopened this week I guess they need to see if we've retained enough to keep going.

You are allowed to work, either voluntarily or as a paid employee, as long as the work is

a) outside the hours you would normally do in your furloughed employment - essentially think of it like if your employer called you back in at a moments notice you could do it, sort of thing
and
b) not in any way to the detriment of your employer - ie working in the same 'field' in such a way that you might give a competitor an advantage

The JRS changes quite fundamentally in October, so we can probably expect to see huge redundancies in a few weeks time.

It would be interesting to work out how much cheaper/more expensive it would be to keep people on the 'furlough scheme' rather than putting them on 'the dole' - personally speaking it would almost certainly save us quite a lot. I am not receiving anything even remotely near £2,500 pm - take the £2k away, and then a bit more and we're getting there. I might be very good, but i'm really quite cheap. One wonders how common that is.

Ultimately the Treasury will find itself supporting people either way - some of them will have jobs that no longer exist, some of them will have jobs that will reanimate. Whether you pay out to keep people 'sort of' employed or definitively 'not' employed seems a little bit redundant at this point.

Little one has a stinking cold. She also has a cough and a bit of a temp. So we are in self isolation. Tried to book a test online. We are now waiting for a call from a 111 nurse to discuss further before we can get a test. The call will be within 12 hours

The wait is worrying. Fingers crossed for you all.

They are now making you talk to a nurse before you book a test? Wow...
I think they require more details?!?!? I'm fairly sure its just a standard cough/cold but I don't want to take any risks. Pretty sure this will be the first of many tests she will have going by previous winters and coughs/high temperatures

Having booked a test online twice this suggests to me they are going to pick and choose who gets one now. What a sad state of affairs.
