Just don't get how people can just close their eyes and go to sleep straight away for hours !
This is me, it's a clear conscience... ;)

For years I was a terrible insomniac, now I have several rules that work for me.

No caffeine after 4pm.

No phone/ipad/computer for an hour before bed.

No clocks in the bedroom.

When I get into bed.... Breathe in for 7 seconds, out for 5 seconds. At the same time think of your body parts relaxing one at a time, ie, start with toes, imagine all stress and pain leaving your toes, then the base of your feet, then your heals, ankles, calfs etc etc.... Work your way up till you get to your head...

Always works for me... I'm asleep in seconds.

Staying asleep however is another matter... I've not conquered that yet, 3 hours is probably my max, the slightest thing wakes me up, noise, light, snoring husband.

I used to take an hour or so to go to sleep, I don't drink any caffeine now and always read for a while before switching the light off. I suffer from blepharitis at this time of year, and have a heated eye mask I wear. The upside of which is it makes me feel really secure and definitely helps me to go to sleep.

I'll try that tonight @littleme .

If I'm posting through the night you know I've given up and got up again.

Think I'm missing my cider to knock me out ( 4 weeks booze free tomorrow ...... :D )

I get up after a while and read for a few hours downstairs to try to make myself sleepy. Just ordered loads more books today , as getting through them rather fast lately. Tried not having cuppas , but warm milk before going to bed. Lie there telling myself the milk should make me drop off...

I never sleep at all when we go on holiday either and leaving for an early flight. Tried going to bed for a couple of hours like hubby , but just doesn't work. I just stay up all night and don't even feel tired the next day on holiday. (Good job I'm still wide awake to drive to the airport though) He's the one managing to snore his head off on the plane to pass the time away most of the way!

Still up , not the least bit tired, and can hear hubby doing his best to wake the whole Street up with his grunting & snoring.
It'll be a miracle if @littleme 's relaxation method works , but about to give it a go ..

Well, that hasn't worked for me @littleme .

Next idea..found the hot water bottle to see if that relaxes me enough to drift off...

Edit ..... Decided I must just be meant to function on one hours kip a night!

I can't sleep if there is something to do, I always stay up through the night for early morning flights (including a 10 hour layover in Milan, that was boring!). I can sleep normally though, and lack of alcohol actually helps after a while. I never get a great nights sleep after a drink, even though I go to sleep straight away.

I am the same. Never a good sleep and up way earlier than I would if sober.

Did something different at work today, it was a late night, but very easy..... Wondering if I want to keep getting up at 5.30am & putting up with lots of stress when I could be stress free but a very late night......
5.30am - best time of the day.
