I used to drink in the 4 crosses in the mid-70s however along with most of that decade it's all a distant memory and i canna remember 'mine host'......

I ♥ cryptic crosswords
On the same subject I used to drink in the hand and cleaver as a teenager and I dont think I ever knew they had hosts never mind the name of one

I also was a member of the 'nursery' in The Sun where Brian and Potcheen used to turn a blind eye to the youth policy

The landlord of the Pheasant had a proper blind eye in them days too

Am I John Connor.
I'm certainly not Sarah.

Walter Newton was at the Crosses for 7 years, came from the Joiners - obviously not memorable then!
You may have drunk in the Mutant Turtle as well

Pheasant - may have been 'Blind Pugh'

I too drank in the cleaver as younger person walked there & back from Doxey before passing my driving test. Then took it turns with a mate to drive there. The gaffer then was Malcolm Ford.

Met Ozzy Osbourne at the cleaver a few times he lived about 50 yards down the road from the pub.

Brian went to the Joiners, I don't know who took over from him at the Bushes.
My hobby is Stafford Pub research and I have your dad at the Hop Pole 51-54, then a gap before he appeared at the Albion 57-63, then a gap before he was back at the Hop Pole 66-80. Did he run any other pubs 55-56 and 64-65? It's uncanny that he married a girl from Roscommon, since the Connors came to Stone from Roscommon in 1847. I was never able to find Mary Connor's maiden name, she came from Mayo the next county.

hi thanks for that .we moved to the raven and bell in newport salop in the early 60s dad was only there for 18months to two years , im not sure what happened in the 50s , will have to ask my sister to check on the dates, i do remember him doing some relief at the waggon and horses for a bit but we never lived there, im pretty sure they ran the Falcon hotel at Stone when the first got married because they used to tell me tales of some tragedy that had taken place there and the blood would never come out of the ceiling. maybe some other staffordians can shed light on it .

Mr Feenan at The Eagle happily served us at 14 and it did us no harm

Cuckoo!!
The Eagle had Lounge Bar, Pool Room with hatch/bar, Darts Room, which was served through a hatch via the entrance hallway. The Bird in Hand will not serve via the hallway hatch.....

Blood in the ceiling - Spoken tonight to Aunt Peggy Connor, used to live at Church Street, just up from the Falcon. She knows Betty very well and she used to visit John & Vera who had a fruiters. She also knew your uncle Tom, dad and grandad, she went to the Albion a few times to see him. Does not remember him being at the Falcon nor anything about the ceiling. The Falcon and Robin hood were her locals. She has a vague recollection that he may have been at the Rising Sun in Margaret St. It all ties up how the Ferries and the Connors were very good friends through a couple of generations.

Leave it with me, I will go the the William salt library and look in the Trade Directories tomorrow. I may have some luck as all the pubs listed the occupiers.
Peggy doesn't keep in touch, she knew she was at Highfields thats all.

Are those 4 seperate problems?

They've not served from the hatch in ages, they did years ago though. Plus if you knew the barmaids it helped!
