UK Students - An Apology

John Marwood

Some time ago I made a comment that could have implied that UK students would revolt en-masse

Via Twitter

I would like to apology to those students who today got out from under their pizza boxes to protest in person on the (privately owned) streets of London

That is the end of the statement

Looks can be deceptive.

Word on the street is that Shaun Wright Phillips orchestrated the violence

Stop so many people going to uni, and the costs will fall. Years ago only the brightest went, and it was all free. Now we have every man and his dog going, and it costs a fortune. I have no idea how people expect higher education to be funded? So glad I went in the last Tory stint, couldn't have afforded it under Labour and could afford it even less now!

I went under Real Labour, don't confuse that with New Labour - it's not quite the same thing....

Student Loans came in under the Tories - 1989 I think. -

As did renaming all the Poly's whose origins came from a Labour programme planned and implemented in the Sixties to give Academic status to subjects like Engineering, Electronics, Languages etc. rather than maintain the curriculums of Classical History, Latin etc.

I agree that it has become a lifestyle choice and almost an entitlement now as opposed to something an individual really had to aspire and commit to. Soon it will be the preserve of the Rich again. Parents bailing out their offsprings who have just scraped a third in 'Golf Course Management' (I kid you not - genuine course)

Oh I got a loan, I just got a grant too! Then under NuLabour we got grants scrapped and tuition fees introduced, plus the loan terms became a lot less friendly! I've never paid a penny of mine back because I've never earnt the threshold set, that threshold was less than half for others I know and some were made to pay it back when on 12k.

same here.

and i dont mind admitting that if they revise the thresholds before the deferment dates in february i will panic quite a lot....im still repaying loans that i had to take out to clear my graduate loans when my bank account ceased to be a graduate account.
