I need a relatively inexpensive laptop - 300 quid max - with DVD player/burner . Any I should be avoiding and does it matter if I buy it from PC World ( i know they are trading on break even only at the min ) Do they have a poor reputation still?

Don't be surprised if you go into PCW and the one you saw in an advert isn't available. The feckers are STILL pulling the bait-and switch scam (well, they were on thursday) to try to flog you something for 200+ more.

Yea anno,I find the staff at Currys friendlier tho,we didn't get what we went in for,I think what he ended up with was a higher wotsit than the 1 he wanted,so he was happy.

I use PC World as a showroom only.

I use it to see if the laptop is any good.

If it is, I go to ebuyer and get it from them.

We once knew a fellow who worked there - and he told me all about how they worked, and I'm sorry but I don't want to buy from anywhere that'd sell a pensioner a £2k water-cooled monster just to "browse the internet"

I'm with you on the dell suggestion, they cheap and decent and aftersales service is very good.

I'd personally avoid acer, nothing but trouble in my experience.

Toshiba are good machines, but I have heard that in the unlikely event it does break, they're a nightmare to deal with.

agree with all..

toshiba have a rep for being bulletproof, and are used a lot in the corporate environment as a result.. i personally have bought from dell outlet, and have recommended it to 3 different people, all in the last 6 months are so, and we're all chuffed to bits..

one of the aforementioned people even dropped his laptop & smashed it to bits by accident, thought he'd chance his arm with dell and say it arrived like that, and they cheerily sent him a branny, no questions asked! can't get much better than that, imo.. and it's a beast - FullHD, blu-ray, dedicated graphics, etc. for about £600 delivered, or something daft..

don't forget to check hotukdeals for the current best deals as well :)
