Crossfields House

If you don't recognise it by name you almost certainly have seen it. It's the big house opposite the old Police HQ on the Cannock Road (the one they didn't demolish). A quick google search didn't really pull up any history on it.

Had a little gander this evening and looks like they are stripping it out and doing some refurb work to it. Would make a very nice restaurant or managed office space. There's tonnes of grassed land at the back as well as a stable block and very overgrown greenhouse too.

Be nice to get a restaurant up this end of town, saying that would love to move my office in there!

For Sale signs are already up and have been for a while - i would so love to buy it, but suspect it's a little out of my league.

I'll have a look when i can, do tell if you find out any more - there is (or at least was) a date inscribed above the door of, if memory serves, the 1880's, though my memory has moments of extreme unreliability.

I'm sure it said 1881 above the door when I walked past the other day.

There was a team of decorators in there when I went past on Monday. Would have loved to have gone in and had a look around it. During the icy weather this winter there must have been a bad burst,as they were pumping gallons of water out of it one morning.
Always thought that if I won the lottery I'd buy it and turn it into a really nice hotel and restaurant :) Fat chance of that but a lovely dream.....

Ive just looked at the planning application on the SBC Planning Portal online (11/15602/COU), & yep they just want to turn it into one house. "No external changes" to the building, apart from reducing the size of the car park. Gardens to be retained in full. Im very surprised as a developer could have easily fit a whole cul-de-sac of houses on the back of the site, accessed off Wildwood, retaining the house as apartments if neccessary. I guess the new owner liked it & got in there first before the developers- good luck to him/her!

EDIT- link for the Planning Portal http://www.staffordbc.gov.uk/planning-public-access- you have to scroll down & click "Click here for the new planning public access". Then search on the reference number 11/15602/COU

i'd have loved that as a house, returned to it's original use; is a nice next chapter for the building.

4 beds seems a little on the low side. But then I imagine there will be a computer room, games room, sauna, two bathrooms, study, library and so on.

Don't they just get planning permission for stuff so when they come to sell they have multiple uses available? It doesn't actually mean it will become that.

Seems strange as it still says it's available for sale on the sign.

There is easily enough space on the back to put up a marquee on there. Stafford Registry office for instance will be looking for a new home soon when they all move into the new build wont they?

I was looking for info on it the other day, but got rather side-tracked by a Police Authority pdf page of meeting minutes - a burst water pipe in the new year (mentioned above) actually led to a reduction in the price they got for it.

It also mentions the land where they did demolish thus,

Item 22 on Agenda
Staffordshire Police Authority – 1 June 2011
DISPOSAL OF FORMER POLICE HEADQUARTERS, CANNOCK ROAD,
STAFFORD
Report of the Chief Constable
The appendix to this report is not for publication as it contains information
relating to financial or business affairs (Paragraph 3). The Author of this report
considers that the public interest in maintaining the exemption outweighs the
public interest in disclosing the information.
Purpose of the report
1. To update the Authority on the proposed timetable for the disposal of the
former Police Headquarters, Cannock Road, Stafford.
Background
2. The Authority is seeking to dispose of approximately 16 acres of land
which is situated on the junction of Cannock Road and Weeping Cross in
Stafford. Residential planning permission has been sought and a
resolution to grant has been received. The permission will be granted
once the Section 106 agreement is in place.
3. The timing of the marketing exercise has been slightly delayed due to the
completion of an OGC Tendering Exercise for the appointment of
commercial estate agents. This exercise is now in its final stages. The
marketing exercise is planned for the autumn of 2011 with a view to a
final disposal in 2012.
4. The attached report sets out further details of the disposal exercise and
seeks the Authority’s views on the process to enable the marketing
exercise to commence without delay.
Recommended: That
(1) the report be noted; and
(2) the timetable process for the marketing exercise and the
appointment of professional agents to support the exercise be
agreed.

CHIEF CONSTABLE

Any update on who or what is going on here? I heard it was something to do with the woman who used to own the Fancy Dress shop on Newport Road?

Planning permission sign outside it named a 'Mrs Corbett' the last time I looked a few weeks ago.

You are right Mrs Corbett does/or did own the Fancy Dress Shop and is also the owner of the Abbey Hotel on the Lichfield Road and the Xerox Centre, Dunston Hall on the A449. Don't know what she intends to do with the old Police House though.
