Description:

The HMV Model 157 was available between autumn of 1927 and circa 1932

This Gramophone embodied the pinnacle of acoustic Gramophone design excellence; by the mid-thirties the wind-up horn Gramophone was obsolete, having been replaced by realistically priced electric sound amplification models. The Soundbox is the part where the needle is inserted, this Gramophone has a Model 5A Soundbox which incorporated the ultimate and final HMV design features. The greater the distance between the Soundbox diaphragm and the mouth of the Horn the better the sound quality. The complete area underneath the playing deck is utilised by the internal horn, the sound is communicated through a series of baffles mathematically designed so as not to distort the sound. The effect is that the Sound has to travel a long distance inside the Gramophone to the front of the Horn, hence the sound quality improvement.
The gramophone has an automatic pointer which moves to show the record playing speed, 12" turntable and the powerful No. 32 two spring motor.

£120? Are you sure? I'm not expert but that must be worth some money these days, surely?

Yes, this Gramophone could fetch quite a bit at auction but as auctions go it really depends on the amount of interest in the item. This Gramophone is somewhat of a niche collectable as opposed to a highly desirable antique.

If you've still got it after Christmas let me know, this could make a great present for my grandfather, he's a former BBC radio engineer and is obsessed with this kind of stuff. Sadly I'm not in a position to buy it right now.

Unfortunately not at the moment, I am in need of cash as I am moving house on Saturday and need to put down a phenomenal amount of money to move in. I'll let you know if anything changes though!

Just a thought - if you are keen to sell, there is an antique evaluation wallah at the Castle visitor centre today, 11am-1pm.

They will take the item off your hands and put it up at auction for you, then send you your cut, minus commission etc. Presumably you can put a reserve price on it; i don't know all the ins and outs but you can discuss it with them.

Thanks Withnail but I only just checked this thread and have missed the auction. Keep me posted on any similar events.
Thanks again

Chuck it in penkridge auctions. Looking at it from your pics it would make about £60. Dont forget that these days if you put to higher reserve and it doesnt sell the auction house will charge you for a no sale.
