Running in Stafford.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, i thought about putting it in the sports section, but this seems more "stafford related"

Move if needs be...

I was just wondering, anyone here that goes running around stafford? if so, reccomend any routes?

i've been using the same route which is getting rather boring, but i like it because it's not on the main road (self-conscious) lol then again i have not been for a month.. i need to start again (damn christmas!)

Does not seem that many places you can go without having to go on a main road-

Any advice would be cool, also any clubs around that are worth joining ?

There's a few runners on here - http://www.staffordforum.com/viewtopic.php?id=8665 - they'll be along in a bit, I'm sure - but it might help to know whereabouts you are located.

Hi Zylo,

I go running along the disused railway line between Stafford and Gnosall which is straight flat and attractive.

PM me and Iwill do my best to help you further. I will need to know, 1.How many times a week you are likely to go? 2.Time of day, (e.g. Do you need lighted areas?) 3.Do you want to run with a partner/group? 3. On/off Road? 4. Approx' distance/time you want to run for. 5.Rough area you will be running in. Cheers :)

Do you? Well if you see someone huffing, puffing, looking dangerously close to collapse and attached by a waist-line to a mad dog, give me a wave!

I do a number of circuits, post xmas its been the shorter of them all, up sandon road, to the lights, then cut through to the isabel trail. down there for a mile or so.

Some of my routes go through there using the path down the side of the works that goes under the railway and then over the river Penk, you can then run along the canal in either direction and then either loop back round the estates or run up Radford Bank and then back down through the estates..

Something like this is about 3miles but quite hilly for a decent shortish run and there's hardly any main roads.

You could cross at the bottom of Radford Bank and ascend through Wildwood to come out at the end of Silverthorn way, if you want to avoid running alongside the main road. There might be some steps involved - not sure, I haven't done it for a couple of years now.

The abandoned railway between Stafford and Gnossal in the summer can't be beaten. Relatively flat and a good surface mostly. Although best to do it with someone else as it gets a bit isolated at times.

Just past Gnosall you can get onto the canal towpath via some very steep steps. Turn left if you don't mind the mud for a fabulous run along the water, Normally the only company along there is a resident heron and occasional kingfisher. I love the isolation of it and have never had a moment's alarm either on the line or the towpath. I did get shouted at once by an old lady. That put me off for a while but now I run with the Archers Omnibus in my headphones and wouldn't hear if she did it again.

Cannock chase by far the best place locally to go running in my opinion. The only trouble is you would have to drive there first. i find running round the the streets really boring go up marquis drive there are loads of running routes from off there.

I run down the old railway line between gnosall and Stafford but I find it boring running up and down it... Try going round the millennium field and 'dudas woods' breaks it up a bit... Problem in the winter though is that you tend to have to stick to the streets cause its dark in the country side. I used to live by the chase and that was by far the best place. Jacobs ladder is also good for running and canals are always flat!

A group of up to 12 of us used to do a series of efforts, up to the last step & right to the top of the hill; brisk walk to the bottom, then repeat! Our best was 10 efforts, :slayer: but that was in the 80's, and I would be lucky to do ten steps now! :quagmire:

To save any confusion, "Effort" Means fast run!

Come to think of it, we pobably did contibute as much methane into the atmosphere as heard of cattle! Should have harnessed that free energy source! Could have lowered our Carbon footprints on a Sunday morning session! instead of letting that methane disappear! Damn! :bum:

I'm training for the Stafford half so I'm running several different distances/routes. I did 9 miles on Sunday from Baswich down to Milford, up the Brocton Road and back along the A34.

I normally plan them on www.mapmyrun.com Its a useful site as you can search for routes uploaded by others local to you, or create your own (the follow roads tool on the mapping is genius!

Also, if you have an iPhone (or possibly other smart phones) then they have a free app that uses gps to track your routes, times, distance etc. All of that is uploaded onto the main site so you can track your progress.
