Admin edit: Moved poll to a normal thread, as polls will not be carried over to the new Forum, unfortunately; see this post for details. Original poll options were:

  • Yes
  • No
  • It's Up to Them
  • Don't Know
  • Don't Care

With the SNP announcing a referrendum on independance in 2014 do you think that Scotland should be independant?

Edit 15/09/2014: I have closed this thread and replaced it with a poll, so please continue to discuss this important topic in the new Scottish independence thread. :)

It is not for me, or other outsiders, to say whether, or not, Scotland should be independent. It is simply a matter for the people of Scotland.

The Scots can say they wish to be independent, but the final decision will always rest with Parliament, the devolved powers that they have only exist because Parliament allowed them to, same as Wales.

Under the current administration, there is no chance of an independent Scotland, the Tories just would not do it.

It's not in their DNA

(oh I really hate that phrase!)

At the moment running the country properly isn't in Cameron's DNA :D

if they want to be i would let them, but it would be full independence, i reckon they would soon miss the subsidies paid to them. the other benefit would be the west lothian question would be answered.

they may get subsidies, but who would own the north see oilfields? if we give them independence they'll want them, which we'll be unwilling to allow them. and if we did they'd only get invaded by america...

Share it on a per person basis, with weighting based on extra subsidies. They get approx 20% more spent on them per person than the UK does IIRC, due to the remote areas mainly. NI is even higher, but I guess a lot of that is to fund our military presence.

EDIT: And I say let them choose, none of my business really. If it were up to us, I'd also like to kick a few housing estates out of the UK too.

I say its up to them. If they want independence though I would want it to be complete and true. They would need thier own armed services, health system, the whole shaboom... If they think they can make it work then good luck to them!

The mechanisms for separation are well tried - Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, Sudan, East Timor and many other recent examples exist.

And there's even Germany, as a sort of reverse example.

I think we are stronger as a union but would not be too worried if they decided to go their own way.

If we stay as one country I would like to see the abolition of the regional assemblies ( another unnecessary layer of bureaucracy) and an harmonisation of laws.

Thought: Why doesn't the rest of the Union hold a referendum to see if they still want Scotland to be a part of it?

Of course, England could just leave the UK.
.....and EU, NATO, UN, Commonwealth and Eurovision and just re-instate the British Empire.....

Who can forget the wild celebrations that marked the 300th anniversary celebrations of the Union in 2007?

I'm only just recovering now.

Or am i?

Let them have a non binding referendum to gauge the level of support. If that indicates they want to be independent then let the other members of the union have a referendum to define/agree the scope of seperation. The Scots can then be empowered to have a constitutionally sound full and final binding vote to accept the terms defined and in doing so confirm their wish to spit away or remain in the union. This affects us all, we all should have input into this process.

I honestly dont mind either way. I imagine it costs us more than they bring in. They do have a fair bit of oil though....

Let them vote on it.
