The OP has frazzled my brain... are you saying you are looking for a new antivirus software for your sons laptop?

If so then I would highly recommend not paying anything at all for any and instead getting the free version of Avast.

Have been using it for years myself, have also recommended for various family and friends who all use without any problems so far. Total cost = £0

NOOOOOoooooo not AVG pleeeeeeeeaaaaase.
It's becoming very unstable of late. Best free anti-virus IMO is Microsoft Security Essentials.

I always used to recommend AVG, but since 2011 it has rapidly become bloatware and is causing freezing issue's for many people. Not only that, but it's "hit rate" seems to have dropped off too.

Microsoft security essentials (free) and Malwarebytes anti-malware (free-version) make a great combination and work flawlessly alongside eachother.

Sorry, was originally a typo above (which I have now corrected).... I meant to say, get AVAST.... very good IMHO.

I too always used to use and recommend AVG (hence my confusion) but I agree it went very poor.

I have always found comodo to be pretty good but have never used the geek buddy that tends to come with it, however it has proven pretty good so far.

To the original poster...

I think the main point here is that there are many anti-virus solutiuons, and none are necessarily 100% effective... what one misses another one will catch and vice versa. However this is even true of expensive solutions such as Norton, Kaspersky, AVG Internet Security etc etc etc.
Basically - don't bother paying and install one of the many free ones we've discussed and you'll be about as protected as you can be! Use common sense when surfing and if you choose to visit "naughty" sites or download movies and stuff via illegal methods then expect to get in a mess at some point regardless of what internet protection you use ;)

We can all give you our opinion (and that's all it is) on what is best to use - but none of us are right and none of us are wrong. It's a preference on what works for you. I trust the combination of the 2 free products I listed, but could I promise you 100% that you won't get a virus still? Nobody could.
