Sanity check need please for Apple E-mail accounts

If you are a Mac user with a mac.com email address, are you completely bamboozled by the apparent need to move your account to iCloud with the attendant need for the 10.7 (Lion) operating system and a machine on which to run it before some time in June 2012?

I have no idea what is going on here except for a more than sneaking suspicion that this is a cynical attempt to sell machines.

I have pre paid for my account and am concerned that I am going to lose it if I don't upgrade to 10.7 and have got totally lost in the warren of alleged help pages.

Help...Please...If you can...Cheers...Ecker.

I was under the impression the mac.com email accounts were apart of the mobile me projects, However I did upgrade to 10.7 so ended up with iCloud so have not been aware of any phase to force you to get lion, The only difference is that mail seems to have iCloud accounts almost built in, However if you own an iphone or ipod or alike if think that makes up for it due to the iOS intergration. Hope that helps

Many thanks for that GDavies.

When I log into my mac.com account, I get a message saying: "It's time to move to iCloud, MobileMe ends soon. Move from MobileMe to iCloud today to keep using your mac.com and me.com accounts.

More than a bit worrying I think you'll agree.

Yes very odd as the mobile me was done as an aid to track your iphone if lost etc, However it could be a ruse so that they don't have to keep the me.com domain.

If you do have an iPhone use upgrade to iOS 5 and then sign in with your mobile me account and it saves you having to have lion if you don't want it. That's if you own an iPhone though

Thanks again for that.

I suspect that "ruse" sums it up very nicely. People who don't have an Intel based machine on which to run 10.7 will possibly be left out in the cold and the use of the word: "today" in the: "Move from MobileMe to iCloud" message smacks more than a little of bullying. I'm getting more than a little concerned about Apple. I also wonder if the U.S. has the same end of year accounting arrangements as the U.K. i.e. March 31st...cynical perhaps but possibly accurate...lol

Thanks for that BigBlue.

Unhappily all that it has told me is: "You are about to be disenfranchised because you will not buy the latest operating system and/or a box on which to run it"

This is a singularly shoddy approach by Apple. I will lose iWeb which I paid for, the ability to share files via iDisk and my E-mail facility.

You can doubtless tell, I am not best pleased. If ever this was a cynical approach to selling more machines, it couldn't be bettered.
