Gary McKinnon not to be extradited?

I notice the UK has decided the chances of a conviction here are slim, so have dropped all charges against him.

Or he's spent the best part of a decade on tag already which is more than lots of people get for crimes against other people.

I still find it worrying that nobody knows how many others before him wandered around those systems, if he'd not been caught how many more would have? It was only his leaving a message that their security system was crap that alerted them to a problem!

Inspires confidence that the 'button' could never be pushed by accident, doesn't it?

If he truly just typed 'password' into the box and had access to the entire US defence system and NASA then this is indeed scary.

And if we know the US system is that easily breachable, what of our own? As we automate more and more tasks the ability to cause mayhem increases, with nothing more than a keystroke. The only solution is to ensure critical systems are not online in any way surely? The vast majority of people who try this sort of thing are teenagers that rarely leave the house, and even our present government doesn't scare me more than the idea of a frustrated pubescent teenager calling the shots!

I used to see H-bombs in my youth - the chances of them surviving the journey, arriving at the right place and actually going off never seemed very high to me.

I was always more worried about "ours" than "theirs"..

If I was the US Government then I'd be thanking him for highlighting security weaknesses prior to them being discovered by terrorists and then offering him a very well paid job for the Government designing and testing future security systems.

I certainly wouldn't be locking him up for 60 years. Then again this is America we're talking about.
