Anyone here use a VPN? Do they work?

I think it depends exactly what your problem is. A VPN is to hide who you are from people who may be watching, for whatever reason (:strange:). It wont stop a virus or any spyware in most cases, because you yourself have navigated to where the spyware is so you found it. Does that make sense?

I don't use a VPN yet, but I've been thinking about it lately. All my usenet traffic is encrypted, so when I'm being a naughty pirate they can't tell what my pr0n preferences are, but they can still see I was doing 'something'.

Thanks for replying - in case you were not already aware I am a buffoon. So..will this stop my computer from being hacked/taken over?

Not at all. This just allows privacy of my activity online. All my ISP can see is the amount of bandwidth I consume and not actually the stuff that is coming down the line.

I download lots of Linux distributions for testing.

Honest, Guv.
