Are the speed cameras working in Staffordshire?

I've just seen on BBC news that all West Midlands speed cameras have been switched off due to the cost of developing images but I'm not sure whether this includes Staffordshire.

I can't understand why any councils would want this to be public knowledge as surely a non-operational speed camera is still a deterrent.

It will be interesting to see if the accident rate increases as a result.

I don't know anybody that's (admitted that they've) had a ticket from a fixed camera for the last couple of years.

Someone once got Norfolk Constabulary to admit that they hadn't had any film in any of theirs for over a year - for cost reasons.

However there are no plans to turn off any more of the fixed cameras that are used in Staffordshire.
The county has 263 housings but 130 of these are not in use and only 29 are turned on at any one time.
Last year the number of motorists in Staffordshire caught by fixed cameras went up 20 per cent to 26,295.
The county also has six mobile camera vans.
Government figures show the number of fatal collisions in Staffordshire went up from 29 in 2010 to 37 in 2011.

29 out of 263 is pathetic. Seems that local politicians put the car driver vote before safety.

Beware as this only refers to the old cameras that contain film. The new digital ones are all operational as far as I know. Certainly I know for a fact that the ones on the M6 from J8 up to 10A all work.

Its just a trick to fool everyone into complacency and then when we least expect it ' bam' all the cameras get switched back on and the rozzers land enough dosh to finance their liquid lunches for the next three years! :pint:

Only if you choose to break the law by driving too fast.

How do these actually work.?? I'd say at any one time 80+% of drivers on the M6 are exceeding the speed limit. I've definitely passed these going faster than 70 yet no speed ticket so far? Surely they don't ticket everyone who exceeds 70, it would be 100's of thousands of people a week?

er, what speed cameras?? :|

i went to brum the other weekend, and had a clear run so.. erm.. it didn't take me long to get home, shall we say.. i saw markings on the road, but thought these were just the "let's put markings on the road when there isn't actually a camera in the hope it will make people slow down" type affairs, like you get on parts of the M1 - i certainly didn't see any cameras anywhere..

i hope i'm not due a surprise "gift" in the post soon!

The cameras work when the variable speed limit signs are activated. So if they are off then, in theory, you should be ok.

I don't think it undermines anything. The article only refers to the total number of people killed and not to serious injury accidents which people are not killed. It is also an aggregate figure for all roads. The relevant figures would be those for stretches of road or locations covered by cameras. At the moment, mobile camera vans are still very much out and about and I daresay awareness of the likelihood of fixed cameras not containing film may not be that high, but that could change.

I still maintain that local politicians are compromising safety for votes by running away from speed enforcement.

Well when I last had the 'pleasure' of going down the motorway on Thursday evening the variable speed signs were on for 60 mph......and I can assure you that no-one was doing 65 or less. Should everyone that went down the motorway at that time expect a ticket?? I just don't buy that so many thousands of cars are going to get a ticket. Call me cynical

If you look at the stantions (spelling??) on the other side to which you are travelling you can actually see the camera's. So if the lines are on the road, the cameras are definitely there as well............!

All I know is that a friend of mine got a ticket for doing 60 when the signs said 50 at 2 in the morning when there were no roadworks or hold-ups in sight. Beyond that I know no more nor less than you beyond the official version of when the cameras operate or not.

I "Tested" Most of the ones on the Wolverhampton road no flashes :P
can you pop down to brum for me, please, and test all the ones on your way back on the M6? i'm a bit worried after what proactive has said..

thanks :v:

My theory is that speed limits on highways are actually in nautical miles per hour, for practical purposes - so, in a 60mph you are actually safe if you stay below 60 knots.

I'll have to remember that next time I take the boat to Birmingham ;)
