Sounds like the same guy who designs modern cars!
It's been annoying me more and more all day.
The 'charge' meter had failed because the bit of paper with the markings on had come unglued and obstructed the needle - so you couldn't tell how near the end of the battery storage was. When I finally got the meter open I replaced the markings using some coloured felt pens.
To get at the dial, however, I had to dismantle the 'dashboard' - this involved a dozen screws, two of which were recessed down long holes and it was impossible to get a screwdriver in them, due to the handlebars being in the way. It's not possible to remove the handlebars until you've got the covers off - I had to codge up a special screwdriver to get them out.
When I did get in there, I discovered that, although the meter was clamped in place by two screws, they had also dribbled hot glue all over the place - just to be sure - and the meter was soldered to the loom, when all other connections were push-fits. When I finally managed to get the meter out, I had to cut it open to get the stupid bit of paper out and mark the dial properly.
Reassemble in reverse order...
