Is your house up for sale? Beware!

Yeah we initially tried to buy a house off Reeds Rains and they basically said they wouldn't put our offer forward to the owners of the house unless we came in to see the mortgage consultant in the office. We said no and they gave my wife such a hard time she was almost in tears when she got off the phone. I had to be very firm with them when I phoned up to put the offer in and they backed down.

Its just such a horrible process trying to buy and sell houses in this country isn't it.

Anyway I'd best get off and tidy up before people come round to view later. :)

Agents such as Bridgfords ask to see proof that you have a mortgage in principle before you view their properties, which is great to cut out time wasters, however it put me off viewing some houses as they demanded we have an hour long appointment beforehand, I think just to try and sell me crap....

I've viewed a few houses with Bridgefords, they didn't ask us for anything.

Reeds Rains are a nightmare we dealt with the Stone office, we viewed a property and put an offer in on the same day, they gave us the same speech about the mortgage consultant and we wanted the house so agreed, I had to bed over backwards and put family members out with regard childcare just to get to the meeting as apparently it had to be done that day. I sat there like a lemon for about 30 minutes past the appointment time, to be ushered into a grotty back room and was asked more personal and financial information that I have ever given to my bank and GP combined. In the end I told her the whole process was ridiculous, I had to pick my kids up and I walked out.

Our latest experiences with Estate agents have really proven how difficult the process can be made although I can throughly recommend James Du Pavey, when it comes to viewings, they're professional, efficient and do things well. If/when we move again I'll be using them.

We had an even odder issue with people who wanted to buy our house.

The couple viewed during a special 'drop by' day organised for all the proerties for sale through our agent. People didnt have to make an appointment or leave any details, they could just drive round the area with a map of homes for sale, dropping in if they liked the look of somewhere.

This couple had somewhere to sell which wasn't even on the market. However they were so determined to move into our house that they asked us to take it off the market and move out within a fortnight to enable them to live there, with a vague indication that they would buy it at such time when their own house sold.

So well would this plan have suited them that they were dumbfounded when we didn't agree. The man kept phoning several times a day to increase the pressure. In the end it got so bad that I stopped answering my phone and asked the agents to say we'd gone abroad.
That sounds really strange - and I can bet they would have never purchased and you would have had the battle to get them out.

I can't believe anyone in their right mind would agree to such a stupid idea, essentially it would open the door to squatters, which is probably what they had in mind.

For a standard mortgage you must have vacant possession upon completion, a friend of mine had to move out for a day when she was purchasing a house she was already living in otherwise it would have invalidated the mortgage offer. Bonkers but apparently necessary.
