Whats the best antivirus/malware package ?

I've got one elderly customer who's computer is so old and slow that anti-virus just bottle-necked the thing...

I found that, on the desktop-wheezing-thing-over-there >, Malwarebytes was just slowing the old girl down - ended up uninstalling it which made a noticeable difference.

On this laptop thing here, with the 7 and MSE and with the Malwarebytes thing, i find no issue. However i've had a couple of occasions recently when trying to watch the cycling - the Tour and currently the Vuelta - where the live streaming links have had nasties picked up by MSE, subsequently removed by MBam, which has made me wary of using the desktop machine for anything other than p0rn & gambling - i kid, i kid.

I recently installed MB on the wheezing thing, ran a scan (clean), then uninstalled it - am thinking this might be a way forward?

If so, how often would you recommend such an action be undertaken?

No need to uninstall MBAM, if you are using the free version then it doesn't run in the background anyway - just manual scans when you open it and ask it to do so. I'd recommend weekly, or whenever something "doesn't seem right" if sooner.

It does, though - using huge amounts of the necessary as it does so.

I regularly had to check in the program manager whatsit as to what was bleeding the old girl dry - how do you think i know it's MBam?

Have you activated the free trial of MBAM pro? If so, that's why it's running in the background

Alternatively, disable it from automatically starting with your computer. Click on start, type MSCONFIG into the run box and hit enter. Next go to the "startup" tab and untick anything that looks related to Malwarebytes (C:/Program Files/Malwareby... etc.)
Apply your changes and MBAM will no longer start automatically, but will still open as normal for you to run manual scans as and when you wish.

Not as far as i'm aware - but then i'm not particularly aware. It is more than likely that this is so, though.

I will try this - thanks wmr

Personally I wouldn't have bothered. AVG is as memory intensive as norton lately. See how you get on. I expect it will start off well but lag you down within a couple of months max.

I seem to be having 'issues' at the moment - is anybody else unable to update the free version of the Malwarebytes database?

I had a notification for a Java update earlier that i accepted, one suspects it may be the cause of my current woes, though the woes aren't overly woeful, it just feels like something is 'not quite right', if you know what i mean?

My concern is that i have inadvertently downloaded something that deliberately stops MBAM from updating so that it can't be removed - is this real life?

Or is this just Fanta sea?

I don't have the free version but i think the database update might be the same and mine updated fine.
