Bands seen in Stafford

Right... off the top of my head, I've seen the following in Stafford:
Stranglers, Boomtown Rats,Buzzcocks, Wire, (New York) Police (yes, with Sting supporting Cherry Vanilla), Ultravox, Rich Kids, Sioxsie and the Banshees (3rd on the bill), The Nips(Shane McGowan), John Cale, Johnny Thunder and The Heartbreakers, Slick(!), The Models, Roger Chapman's Streetwalkers,Deaf School, Suzie Quatro(!),Motorhead, The Cortinas... at The Top Of The World, now Zanzibar.
The Dammed, Eddie and The Hot Rods, The Tourists, Little Bob Story, Simple Minds, Toyah, at North Staffs Poly, now Uni.
XTC, The Enid, Lloyd Cole,Suburban Studs at the college.
Black Sabbath, The Who, David Bowie at Bingley Hall.
Now I know my memory ain't what it was, but what an era for the town!! And what do we have now? Nothing, eh? No venue for up and coming bands, no venue for established bands, nothing. And don't say The Grapes, please. Stoke has, W'ton has, we don't.
I know I will have missed bands out due to memory failure, and there were countless others that I didn't see for reasons of personal taste ( Earth, Wind and Fire, The Eagles, ABBA, Rolling Stones to name a few). And, of course, there was Deprived at The Riverside, Trash supporting Ultravox.....happy days!!
Any memories?

None, although an old college tutor of mine recalled Fleetwood Mac playing in the canteen at the Oval.

I was only 1 at the time, but i'd have loved to have seen Bob Marley at Bingley Hall (July 1980). It would be great if Stafford could rekindle its attraction to big, decent artists.

Over to you Doctor
my memory is way not what it used to be ..who have we seen in Stafford
I remember, Selecter, Bad manners, Texas, Ghostdance ( well i dont!), The Neph ? , Louise ( red jumpsuit & helicopter) , Kingmaker, The Manics, ( although strictly speaking that was stoke ) , Inspirals ,Alter8, a load of named DJs at that Judgement Day rave er um.. Who else I'm sure there was much more can't remember a blummin thing ! I think I must have enjoyed them too much ... must say the late 70s era sounds way much better than the late 80s ones tho some of thos bands are way high up on my "wished I had seen " list .

Anyway hit the recall button and see what you can remember as I 'kin can't !

I'm not sure my memory of those days is up to much, mate. I had a poster from a James gig at the Whitely Building for ages so I uess I saw them. I seem to remember Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry and Mirrors over Kieve. Didn't Desmond Decker do something. Ghost Dance were supported by the Bat Fish Boys (again I've got the poster). We bottled Carter the Unstoppble Sex Machine off stage and SoHo. Primal Scream played the day after supoorting the Cure at Wembly and they kinda wern't up for it! Did Neds Atomic Dusbin play? The first band I saw in Stafford at the Whitely in my Freshers week was the Larks or the Lards or something - I thought they were the La's (There She Goes) and was looking forward to it - the first in a long line of disappointing nights in that god awful place.

Considering I went to every Friday night gig at the Whitely for about 8 years (except Kingmaker) - it's not a very long list of memorable bands is it?

James played at The borough Hall, now the Gatehouse... as did 999 (supported by Deprived ), Fashion and The Cult ( as Southern Cult, I think ). I remember Selector at the poly and have a strange feeling that Desmond Decker was replaced by a stripper !! not popular with the local spare rib girls!!!
The point is getting through, as a town for live music we have died. Any suggestions PLEASE?

Saw Tom Sofa's band back in 1992 when I was at college with him...have photographic evidence too! Love ya Sofa boy! xx

The only one i have seen in Stafford was Toyah, in the Reynolds Bar in 1994. She did a lot of it unplugged as some of the kit had been lost in transit but it was brilliant.

This is great as you can tell age quite simply by the bands you lot have parted cash for.

No one has mentioned some more recent greats as you're all too old to get off the sofa obviously.

Try we try, but how about
Half Man Half Buiscuit at MRI in 2004, support that night was Scott Matthews and he cost me £25 (http://www.scottmatthewsmusic.co.uk/), or
John Otway at the Poly in 78 (cor baby was ridin in the top 10) and Derrick you missed the boat on this one!,
Sensless Prayer at the Surgery (now the Guillemots) 1999 (i think),
DM bob and Jem Finer (the Pogues) Prince of Wales (2005), Stafford Rangers (2006), Servotron (Man or Astroman) at the Malt and hops (the island) aout 2002, still talked about by those who were there to this day.
John Peel at the Gatehouse (come on Rich who were the bands again), well done Gatehouse booking person
the Witchdoktors at the Grapes 99ish (Holty loved em so much he kept the poster on the Wall till he left)
Family Mahone (numerous occasions) at the Rangers

Last but not least I want to hear from anyone who was at the I Know a Gondola Punter/Ted Chippington/I Ludicrous gig at the Cellar Bar Xmas 88/89

or who was older than 1 at the Marley gig (bingley)
or the Pistols in Newport

JS or Reddy Spotty thingy had a lot of input in all these cept Peel and marley, and the cry for a venue has not died. Lets hear from any of you who want this venue to join me, lets put a serious squad of wannta'do's together, support is rampant, hands in pockets cept for brief fondlin is not. An unreleased Punter song was "action speaks louder than words", which is hardly original, but systematic of ANY time

love

I sat in the Gatehouse getting bevvied with Noddy Holder and Ian Gillan once, after seeing the Climax Blues Band and he reckoned that the accoustics were terrible in Bingley Hall and that's why bands stopped playing there. Don't know how true that is as it was after quite a few drinks.

Absolutly. This town needs a decent venue for local bands to aspire to and touring bands to visit - nothing as big a Bingly Hall, just a decent sized venue with a decent bar and a dance floor. I've been hammering on about it for 15 years or more.

Don't remember that one, but Ted did a nite at what is now The Tavern, on the corner of Bridge Street and Mill Bank (not quite 53rd and 3rd, is it?), when it was a wine bar if sorts.... supported by The Trio? I think.
I missed The Pistols at Newport... don't know why ... but did see Adam and The Ants, The Skids, UK Subs, and others that escape me for the moment. Good little venue, The Village was. Now..... can we have something similar in terms of size and attraction for the up and coming please ??

Then there are the old local faves from the past:
Zero Cookies at the Gatehouse Met Studio and elsewhere
Adventure Babies at the Nelson
Some band that had rabbits in the title in what became the Mathouse Vaults
The Infamous Doley Sofas all over the place
etc.....

My first ever gig was at Bingley Hall back in 84, KISS were the headliners and a new up and coming american band were support act,a certain Bon Jovi.

This town needs a venue to host live acts again.

A few posts under my belt
I saw The old Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green at the Staffordshire Yeoman in 1969, Thin Lizzy at the Borough Hall in about 1972, Hawkwind at the Oval in 1971, The Sutherland Brothers and Quiver in about 1979, T2 and The Henry Lowther Band at the the College Tenterbanks site in the early 70s, Bob Marley at the Bingley Hall Osibisa, Hamsters, FourMen and a Dog and Stan Webb at Reynolds.
