Preliminary work has started on a £16 million relief road to ease Stafford’s traffic congestion.

Engineers began assessments at the site of the proposed western access route this week. A planning application, is due to be submitted next spring, say county bosses.

The road aims to cut congestion around the railway station and the Chell Road area by linking the A518 Newport Road at Castlefields with the A34 at Foregate Street.

The route is included in an £80m investment for Staffordshire, which was announced in July.

The Government said the money would be invested in new roads, business sites and training facilities.

A consultation into the revived route was initially carried out in December 2009 but the project was postponed by the Government the following year due to spending cuts. It comes as another £4m will go towards a new roundabout junction on the A34 to improve access to a new £300m power station in Meaford, near Stafford.

A report outlining progress on the scheme was being presented to the county council’s cabinet today.

Stafford borough chiefs have said the road will help reach the target of building 7,000 homes and creating 90 areas of employment in the coming years.

Had a lovely cycle to work today along the lines, all the cyclist had lights on and 3 or 4 people wished me good morning, was really rather pleasant, despite the fact I got f*ckin drenched :D

Do you work close? Within 6 miles of town then ride a bike :britain:

In my case I drive home for lunch to let my dogs out (not really a choice I made given they were my late mothers dogs). If the weather is good I will cycle one of the legs of the journey.

Just wish they'd hurry up and build that cycle bridge. It'll speed things up a bit.

I queue to get through the various road works in Stafford, then queue to get through Stone and finally Longton Road in Trentham has been on 1 way temporary lights for the past 8 weeks... all in all, a journey that used to be 25 mins is regularly taking almost an hour most days and on 3-4 occasions it's been over 90mins!!

Then you woke up.

No that was my journey to work reality. Bet no-one in a car has strangers saying good morning to them and giving them a cheery wave during their journey............more likely to get the v's or middle finger when in a car!

Quite often get a cheery wave in the car on the way to work from another MX5. Not a clue who they are.

All the best

I wonder if they're possibly mistaking you for somebody else? A friend of mine was driving an MX5 during the period just after her first grandchild was born - a blue one with a blonde driver passed me in Eastgate Street with the hood down just after the arrival, so I jovially shouted "Oi! Granny!" at her. Unfortunately, when she turned around to look, I realised that it wasn't her at all - I got several more glowers off this woman over a period of years....
