It would however require a change in the mindset of the people of Stafford, and that I fear is the biggest hurdle, People here are lazy. Instead of cycling, they'd rather moan about the traffic, instead of cycling they'd rather drive to the work, instead of cycling they'd rather get fat and then go to weight-watchers. There has to be a change in people's psyche about cycling and traffic in general, not just a redesign of our urban planning...........although that would be a wonderful start.
There needs to be a chasm dug in the cross hatch areas around that island with a revolving plate on top. When the lights turn red the plate revolves and any vehicles on it at the time gets dumped into a compactor. Lovely old job!I've walked into town from Wildwood and back today (actually got the right day for the dentist this time ) and was glad I was on foot. Absolute chaos everywhere, with the traffic worse when I was coming back at 10am then it was 8.30 - 9.15am!
Main problem stemmed from Newport Road, with traffic queuing all the way back to Radford Bank. Traffic on the island by TK Maxx was made worse by not just one or two cars going through the lights when there was no-where to go , but quite a lot deciding that as there was no-where to go behind the queue in front, they would go through anyway and sit at the side of it. There were 4 vehicles side by side all trying to get into the Newport Rd lane when I crossed over there. This then blocked those trying to get in the other lanes round the island.
Walking down the Lichfield Rd towards town there was a sign saying something like 'Congestion on Queensway, follow diversion '. There was a diversion sign pointing outward- bound up the Wolverhampton Road. Then when I crossed over, there was another diversion sign pointing towards Newport Road. Is it sending traffic up the Wolverhampton Road and down Friars Terrace, to join onto the Newport Road ? The traffic was queuing the whole length of Friars Terrace .

Traffic congestion is clearly a major problem for everyone in Stafford at present. A combination of emergency work on gas leaks, temporary lane closures for the Riverside development and the closure of Tixall Road for renewing of pipes has led to serious congestion at times.
I have taken this up with Highways and asked that as much information as possible be provided and that contractors do their best to keep traffic flowing. Sometimes the timing on temporary signals has caused greater delays than is necessary.
I am also working more generally with the County Council on various improvements which could be made to traffic light timing and road layout which would improve traffic flow. If you have any suggestions which I can also forward to the Council, I would appreciate hearing from you.
