I moved to Brocton Staffordshire just over a year ago and have been busy doing up my house. Now most of the work is done I find i have time on my hands and have nothing to do and no one to talk to.

I am in my 50's and am more a petrolhead than a Jam maker so WI dosn't really appeal. Dosen't seem to be much else on offer in Brocton.

I nearly didnt bother replying to this because there was a similar query a few days ago from a young man who was also new to the area. He wanted to play the piano and he wanted info on music groups. After I had found the info out for him, which to be honest, if he was really interested , he could have found out for himself, he then said "he wasnt the type".
Which left me wondering, why ask the question in the first place?

Anyway I digress, back to you.

I am the opposite to you....I am not a petrolhead and very much a jam maker/cakemaker however I am also not in the WI. I probably would be if there was one in the village. I do believe that they are quite good fun and there is lots going on, its not all jam and Jerusalem.

I am also in my 50's and live a few miles from you in Bednall.

I go into Brocton Post Office daily and I see on his notice boards that there is actually quite a lot going on in Brocton. Quizzes, barn dances, community lunches etc. (In fact one of my fliers is in there for a show I am putting on in Acton Trussell...come along!)
The best thing is just "GO TO THINGS" . then you meet people, then you make friends, then you make more friends and then you might find someone that is another petrolhead. I do believe there is a Berkswich Good Neighbour scheme, perhaps you could get involved in that.

Even if things may not "be you" they may lead to you meeting people that are "you"

The Newsletter publish a annual guide which lists all the local clubs, go in to the office and get a copy...there are HUNDREDS of clubs. My friend joined the Archery club...not my cup of tea but she loves it and made lots of new friends.

Initially dont be picky, go to everything, learn a new hobby, learn a language. Join a rambling group. Volunteer for a charity. Google "Volunteer in Stafford"

Stafford College have so many courses , there must be something that appeals to you.

I moved into our village 15 years ago and it does take time to meet new people.

Just go, be brave, walk in, join in, take part.

Hello Helen,
Are you, by any chance related to Steve Goff, famous steel bike framebuilder in Skelmersdale?
I can relate your frustration. I have plenty to do but on my own, my half orange still missing.

best of luck.

Not related to Steve as far as i know. Although the Goff family tree is far from straight forward. So theres a possibility.

Hi, @Helen Goff,

My name is Sue, I live in Stafford, I'm in my 50's too, I have been looking after my dear mom who has dementia, she is now been placed into a care home because her condition as got worse, bless her. I can't look after her without help and have no other family members to help me.

I love being out and about, walking a few miles, county pubs, travel, dining, theatre . Love baking ,cake/cookie decorating. singing in a choir, Have tried hard to make new friends but most in the groups I attend are married. The W.I isn't for me either,

Most groups for ladies seem to meet for week day afternoon, What about single ladies who work, there doesn't seem any clubs for us.
I have married friends, but I'm a divorcee with grown children, and feel very cut off at weekends.
I wanted to start a Single Ladies Dine and Social Group, for single ladies in the Stafford area . age group from 50 to 70. to meet up and make new friends.
Having a social meet up in Stafford once a month, then arranging weekend activities ,e.g. Weekend Dining out, Weekend Day Trips using Staffordshire coach companies, visiting historical towns, seaside places, Joining ramblers for Weekend walks and then a pub lunch after, Weekend Afternoon trips out, car sharing visiting places of interest and having cream teas etc. Going to Saturday matinee's at local Staffordshire theatres with light supper after, other ideas welcome.
There seems to be plenty of day clubs for semi or retired people but nothing at weekends, for single working or retired ladies, who feel life is pasting them by or maybe are new to the area and want to make new friends, I'm taking names at the moment and once I have a table of 4 interested ladies will start the group. Would some thing like this be more appealing
