Can anybody recomend a small car hire firm for weekend only hires, not looking for the expenisive big boy operations, small, cheap and reliable is what I require. Many thanks.

Wasps - feel my wrath!
I too have used Afford. They are ok , vehicles are ok but in my opinion are more than lacking in customer service skills . They are always a bit suspicious and I would check things like excess in the event of an accident etc . They also have a habit of changing their terms and conditions but have hired numerous cars and vans over the years .Oh and dont bring a photocopy of your licence ( they go loopy, well the old fellah does !) . Also they get abit funny with things like your address not being the same on all documents etc which was a nightmare for such a transient being as myself who very rarely stayed in the same country/county or area for a long time . Never actually had problems with them but they are very strict on their rules . I think it was because they had the only vehicle hire service in town for so long if you didnt want the big renatlas like hertz etc. Also not a huge fan of the oversized dork sticking his thumb up saying "hi" logo . Thats just me tho

However there is an option now have heard lots about this company but never used them they do look nice and cheap tho .

DO NOT USE AFFORD!

They left me and my dad stood on the hard shoulder of the M1 in the freezing cold for 3 and a half hours when one of their vans broke down when I moved back from London. I'd used them 3 or 4 times before and they were fine, but the first time something went wrong their ability to handle any kind of problem disintegrated.

This happened on a Saturday, and they would have just left the van on our drive (it was towed there) all day on Sunday, as the Stafford branch was closed, had I not called somebody in the Stoke office and insisted they remove it so we could get our car on to take Anders Panders' stuff round to her folks' house.

Then I heard nothing from them before Monday lunch time so called them. I didn't even receive an apology from the gormless woman on the phone. All she kept saying was "It's not my fault you broke down!" Anyway, I made it clear I wasn't happy and said I wanted compensation - she said the branch manager was looking into it and would call me back in an hour. At 6pm I got a call from the branch manager who offered me a free rental (not likely, matey) or a 50% refund. I managed to talk him up to £60, as a 50% refund didn't really cover the £25 worth of diesel I'd just put in or all the extra expense and inconvenience caused. Neither did £60 really, but I could see it was the best I was going to get.

Anyway, use them if you want - just pray you don't break down

Enterprise are as cheap as chips.

Although they've abandoned their office on Silkmore lane since the flooding, they have a couple of cars/vans based on the old B&Q car park, or will quickly sort something out for you (01785 220755 - think it diverts to Cannock, but will deliver the vehicle to you). Failing that there's Europcar down at Davies Motors on the Lichfield Road. (01785 227705)

This story is sooooo much funnier the way Rich 'laugh at other peoples mis-fortune' Upsetter tells it.
To be fair, it's not funny in the slightest. Especially the bit where my dad's hands go the colour of Ribena from the cold.
