I've built a well and they have to be wide enough for you to work in - ie wider than the back against the wall technique!

Another useful tip……….

HOW TO SURVIVE IF YOU FALL INTO A CESSPOOL!

Get out quickly. Yes, this helps a great deal. In cases of falls into cesspools and septic tanks, the most common cause of death is asphyxiation from methane gas. The gas causes rapid unconsciousness – deaths in as few as two minutes have been recorded.

Hold your breath for as long as possible between taking breaths.

If you cannot climb out, give one loud shout for help. Tanks and pools that are in use will nearly be full to the top with liquid and solid waste. Do not shout repeatedly – this will deplete your air supply.

Once out, get at least three meters away from the tank before trying to catch your breath.

TODAYS HERO

Cycling champion Lance Armstrong was born on this day 1971. Armstrong, a triathlete throughout his teenage years, focused on cycling towards the end of high school. He trained with the Olympic development team in Colorado, and finished fourteenth in the 1992 Olympics. After winning multiple professional cycling championships, the 25-year-old Armstrong was diagnosed with cancer. Three years later, having battled the disease into remission, he won the first of his several consecutive Tour De France races, the world’s premier cycling event.

SHOOT OUT!

While you are on a long-awaited tropical vacation, the government of the small island nation you are visiting is toppled by a coup d’etat. There is panic, rioting and gunfire in the streets. You pick up the telephone in your hotel room to call your embassy, but the phone is dead. You will have to reach the embassy on foot. As you leave the hotel and move into the street, you see a gang of armed militia on one side of you and uniformed military officers on the other. The two groups raise their guns to do battle, and you are in the crossfire. Do you……?

a) Lie flat in the street, next to the curb.

b) Crouch down behind the tire of a nearby parked car.

c) Run into a nearby building.

d) Stand in place and wave a white handkerchief.

All suggestions welcome…………

Depends on my mood, normally I'd overpower everyone at the same time and take control of said small island nation myself. Today however I am mostly hungover, so would curl up in a ball and cry.

now then......

HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE LINE OF FIRE IF YOU ARE NOT THE PRIMARY TARGET.

Get down and stay down. Do not crouch – get flat on your stomach.

If you are outside and can get to a car, run to it and lie behind a tire on the opposite side of the car from the shooter. If no cars are present, lie in the gutter next to the curb.

If you're inside a building and the shooter is inside, get to another room and lie flat.

Stay low until the shooting stops or until the authorities arrive and give the all clear.

TOMORROW IN SURVIVAL HISTORY - SEPTEMBER 22ND

The Band-Aid / Plaster was patented on September 22nd, 1921. Earle Dickson, its creator, was a cotton buyer at Johnson & Johnson. He developed the gauze-laden strip for his wife who continually burnt her fingers while cooking. The first Band-Aids were three inches wide and 18 inches long.

HOW TO RAM A BARRICADE

Identify the barricades weakest point. The side of the barricade or gate that opens or the place where a lock holds it closed is usually the most vulnerable spot.

Aim for the weak spot. If possible use the rear end of your car (you need a car!) to ram the weak spot in the barricade. Ramming with the front may damage the engine and cause the car to stall.

Accelerate to a speed of 30 to 45 mph. Duck just before impact if you are heading toward in extremely tall barricade or fence. Pieces of the barricade may come through your window or the window may shatter.

HOW TO SURVIVE A BIRD ATTACK

Watch for hovering and clacking. If you observe this behavior, be ready for an attack.

Close your eyes and cover your ears. The bird will swoop down quickly, striking at the head or shoulders with its wings or beak.

Run for cover(!) away from nesting and foraging areas. Run as fast as you can from the area that the bird is protecting. Many species of birds will attack if their nests or foraging areas are disturbed, even accidentally. If a bird attacks, it will continue to attack until you leave these areas.

HOW TO ESCAPE IF TRAPPED IN A WALK-IN FREEZER.

Tap several times on the door to get someone’s attention.

Check the door and lock area. By law, all walk-in freezers must have an emergency release switch on the interior.

Locate a power switch. Some units may have an accessible on/off switch. Turn off the cooling element.

Locate boxes. Tear cardboard boxes apart and spread them on the floor.

Look for insulating materials. Lie down on the cardboard and cover yourself with paper, foam or straw to preserve body heat.

Tap the door regularly until help arrives.

You could shout if you wanted.

FRIGID WATER SURVIVAL TECHNIQUE

You are on a fishing boat in the cold waters of the North Atlantic when a huge storm whips up and rocks you and your boat for hours. You put on a life jacket (if you haven’t been wearing one like you should!). The boat springs a leak and capsizes, and you are left floating in the frigid water. Don’t panic! You read something about this on the ‘ford forum............

Do not attempt to swim. Swimming moves cold water over your skin, causing rapid cooling.

Using your life jacket to keep you afloat, draw yourself into a ball to maintain maximum body heat. If there is another person with you, huddle together for warmth.

If you do not have life jacket or floatation device, grab anything buoyant. If nothing is available float on you back or tread water very slowly. If you cannot float or tread water, button up the top collar of a coat or shirt and splash air and water underneath the fabric to form an air pocket.

Once rescued, look for signs of hypothermia. Slurred speech and a lack of shivering are signs of severe body temperature loss. Immediately, but slowly, warm your body.
