Which Tablet?

My laptop has died and I am thinking of getting a tablet.

I don't need a laptop any more and will use the tablet for movies, music, reading etc so which would you recommend?

How about one of these?

All that I will personally say is that you should thoroughly think it through. Go through your PC and decide what programs you open & why etc.
I have SO many customers every year that move onto tablets and ask me to sell their old laptops. Within a few months most of them come back asking if I have any laptops for sale.

In my own opinion, tablets shouldn't be something that replace computers. They are great for browsing whilst putting your feet up on the sofa, or taking out of the house with you. However if you need to type a lengthy email or letter they're not the best. If you're just a Facebook surfer and occasional online shopper, you would manage no doubt. 3 of my household moved to tablets. Only 1 of those still owns one but even she still uses her laptop as well.

I would agree with you @wmrcomputers - it does come down to what you use it for.

We've been through it many times at work - people insist on switching to the latest must have gadget because they think it's the only way to go, only for everyone to slowly drift back to what they were using before because the gadget doesn't actually do what they need

I use my tablet a lot, but only for web browsing and writing documents with the keyboard docked - I still do all my photo editing and everything like that on my main PC, and if I have any large documents to write I'll use the PC for that too

I'd agree with @wmrcomputers as well.

I've got a 2+year old Nexus 10 and it's fine, though probably a bit expensive. I use it mainly for surfing when I can't be bothered firing-up the laptop, and playing my favourite 40 Thieves Solitaire (which takes up way too much of my time). The only time I use it creatively is when I take video - it saves me buying a video camera.

I brought a Tablet thinking it would make life easy as I use a lot of forms for work.
But in all honesty its not as good as the Laptop, it won't let me manipulate the forms for a starter and then I have to convert the form back to store it on the main PC
I will say that its out lasted 2 iPads that Mrs BP isn't exactly thrilled about, shes asked me to use the Laptop more so she can use the Andriod Tablet

I had the opposite experience, loathed android tablets but inspite of always having been very rude about Apple found iPads very useable. I use a desktop at home, a laptop if I'm staying at a hotel or am somewhere similar, and a tablet when I am out in the wild. Partner & her son us tablets a lot more, accessing emails & the internet when they are in Costa or McDonalds.

If just for this sort of caper, and you want to keep it under/around the £100 mark, i'd say look at a Hudl 2 - some new still available from Tesco (i think - they have discontinued them), otherwise look at a refurb which will be cheaper.

As others have said, not sure it works as a 'replacement' as such, but is a very handy piece of kit, especially whilst out 'n' about. Or stuck in CBA mode.

The £50 Kindle thing sounds like a steal - have no personal experience of it, but would be staggered if nobody 'pon 'ere got one for Xmas.

I've just bought a cheap tablet for our daughter to play with. Went for the galaxy tab e 9.6" which is about £120. We also used Tesco clubcard vouchers to get it even cheaper.
For the money it cost I'm very impressed.

The Hudl 2 isnt available anymore and is actually being sold for more than it cost by a lot of people on eBay.

I've just moved to the iPad pro with the detachable keyboard, it serves my purpose at home Internet, music emails drawing apps with the new ipencil (when it arrives) I do have a laptop through work, that I tend to use when writing documents or using spreadsheets. What was ironic though when I set the iPad up I mistyped the password and needed to do a restore so I could change the password So I could get in, but In order to do that I needed to use the laptop to plug it into iTunes. So it would be difficult at times to get by with the laptop alone, also there is the monthly 3G subscription should you choose to opt for that.

Thanks for all your comments, I have gone for an ipad Mini 2 which was £189.00 from PC World which I thought was a reasonable amount if I didn't like it but am already thinking I should have gone for the ipad air for the bigger screen!
