M6 four lane scheme north of Birmingham 'dangerous' says AA

A scheme allowing motorists to drive on the hard shoulder of the M6 is "dangerous," motoring groups have said. "All-lane running" has been introduced between junction 10a for Wolverhampton and junction 13 for Stafford.

The Central Motorway Police Group said the lack of lay-bys was "cause for concern" and there was "minimal scrutiny" of the scheme on the M6.

Edmund King, president of the AA said: "Laybys are every two and half kilometres - that is about one and a half miles. "If you can't see a lay-by you have to stop in a live lane of traffic and that is so dangerous."

MP's on the Commons Transport Committee have launched an inquiry.

Can't understand why Police/AA have only now woken up to the dangers :mystery:

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
I guess that when they actually switch on the overhead control systems between 13 and 10 then there will only be four lanes available when they allow it. Just like between 10 and 4.

I've used the motorway three times since the cones were removed and haven't used the 'hard shoulder' lane.

There's a bit after 11 northbound that says there's no hard shoulder for 6 miles, so I am not sure it will.

That's because technically there isn't a hard shoulder. It's the same between 10 and 4.

A few posts under my belt
Judging by this morning it will be perfectly safe to stop in the hard shoulder lane and also in the old inside lane too. Everybody just sits in the 2 outside lanes completely oblivious to the possibility that they could move.

Agreed.... Traveling home from work each night I stick in the inside lane and it's as clear as a whistle....

It is confusing  from J10a to J13 it is all lanes running permanently, there is no hard shoulder, just occasional refuge lay-bys. If :cops:were following you and you are not using lane one,and lane one is free, they could do you for lane hogging. Further down toward Walsall it changes to Dynamic m way which does have a hard shoulder that is used at busy times and is controlled by gantry signs. So driving south you need to be in lane one, if possible, and then at 10a move into, er, lane one if the hard shoulder is closed, unless it is open and then you can stay in lane one. Simples. :better: :?: :britain:

Doesn't the M6 from 10a south have a solid white to distinguish a hard shoulder is in existence and from m6 toll junction north it's a intermittent white line to distinguish a normal lane?

Enjoying a drop of red.

Correct, but you can't expect the average idiot motorist to think for him/herself. That's what the middle lanes are for, to accommodate the unthinking majority.

Paid a flying visit to my brothers in Bolton this morning. It looks like roadworks are well under way now with thirteen miles of cones and reduced ( 50 mph ) limit in place from around J20 southbound. So much for keeping roadwork lengths down to a minimum.

I would of thought that stretch would benefit from being a 50... Whenever I've been on it, is always been stop start stop start....

Hoping those full closures have ended when we go to the airport .( When I looked the other week, some of the alternate routes up there also had roadwork signs on the map ) Pain in the arse last year when our usual route Jct 19 to the M56 was closed overight due to roadworks :(

If it is, I'd get off at 17 and go up the A50 through Holmes Chapel and Knutsford, then you'll pop out on the road between 19 and the M56.
