Apparently there used to be a big hotel on that corner before it was knocked down for the monstrosity of a building that stands there now!
There was, and a grand old building it was too.

I used to enjoy going to the Stafford Arms too...they had bar billiards!! Punch Taverns need to sort themselves out and get a decent landlord with plenty of experience and the willingness to stick it out and make it back into the thriving hub of real ale it once was. I remember going there about 15-20 years with my old man for the beer festival, and it was absolutely heaving. People would travel from far and wide to go there, but it quickly turned into somewhere people would go far and wide to avoid!

It was certainly my 'local' from when I first moved to Stafford in 2001, to when it closed. The first landlord I remember was Bob Bell, and he was great. When did you stop going there? If it was after 2001, we've probably met! :D

I'm pretty sure we have....I also live in the People's Republic of Castletown, and if you used to go to the Stafford Arms then i'm guessing you go to the Railway once in a while too. I don't remember Bob Bell as I wasn't a regular...we'd go there if we had an afternoon off and the Railway wasn't open! Last time I went there was a couple of months before it closed for good.

I was also a regular in the Arms until Bob Bell left. I'm one of a number of former regulars who have now moved to the Greyhound.

Because of its location the Arms attracted "locals" from some far flung locations, including Preston and Milton Keynes.

It also occasionally received visits from some relatively well known people, e.g. Bobby George, the darts player called in the once.

It was also one of the few places that "Rocky" from Crewe could get into, to mention just one of the more 'colourful' characters who frequented the place.

Ah, good old Barry - he is indeed a colourful character. I wonder where he drinks now? I was told he's barred from most places, which I find pretty easy to believe.

Where on earth is The Greyhound?

I can't wait to see an estate agents write up of those:

'compact living with good road connections and a unique and vibrant surroundings. Close to essential amenities and bustling night life'

in translation 'tiny flat next to a stupid busy road which is boy racer heaven, directly opposit the bick feck off prison gates and a funeral home and the smell of curry will waft though your houseat every given oppertunity'

He was a regular in The Bird, where he monopolised the jukebox, and The Eagle. Used to get the train down from Crewe.

4000th post? Whatever, I'm nonchalant..
i rarely venture into town at the mo, but the greyhound ticks all my boxes.

if you a real ale man, a trip to the wellington in brum is a wise move. they have 0ver 2,500 guest ales each year with 15 different beers on tap at any one time.

The Wellington certainly is a fine pub on the beer front - can't argue there. It does lack a little on the character front though. They don't do any food, but provide plates so you can take your own in to eat!

The Anchor next door to Digbeth Coach Station is excellent as well (was my regular watering hole before I moved out of Brum!) - beer is always spot on (up to 10 on), and retains its old interior from 1900ish so has a bit of character about it. Usually a bit less wedged than the Wellington.

Yep, another vote for The Wellington. I've been to several of their 'beer festivals' and have enjoyed quaffing down plenty of guest ales. The beer garden leaves a lot to be desired though. You share a windy alley with copious smokers and four large bins. I've been to The Shakespeare, which is a nice Victorian type pub and another one that escapes my memory at the moment but I remember it doing some very fine real ales, too. I like real ales, me!

Yep, and it always has a guest on from the Beowulf Brewery in Chasewater.

Is Rocky still around? I haven't seen him for months. I used to drive him back to Crewe about once a week. The secret to not having to talk to him was to put an Iron Maiden CD on. He'd just dance away in the passenger seat.

Great. Another decent Stafford pub bites the dust. Where the hell am I supposed to go for a pint when I'm waiting for a train?!

 I'm not the only one that doesn't like those apartments then? I walk past them every morning on my way to the station. They've dressed two downstairs bedrooms facing the main road so you can see what it would be like to live there.

Yep - I wanna wake up full of the joys of spring (exhaust fumes from traffic and what ever smells float over from the petrol station) and then open up my curtains to be blessed with a view of the nick. (No offense here to anyone that lives in the terraces up the road - your houses seems considerably more sturdy - and roomy!)

Oh yeah, and there's the funeral home as well. Prime location for a bit of property - anyone buying?
