Just for fun: With Bates Gun shop now sold, what would the forum like to see on the Market Square?

I've been in town today and had a nosey past George Bate/No.7, and it looked like there was a frenzy of painting taking place.

I think they're going to make the cheese and ale festival and open on that weekend, as I think someone here mentioned.

I wish them well.
That would have been mum painting away! These projects are more of a hobby for mum, dad and me. Such a difference to sitting behind a desk all day counting beans!!! The main decorators will arrive next week and you will soon see big changes!

I was talking to the guy who is taking on the pub and we think that it will be open for the cheese and ale festival (albeit in a very limited capacity). It will then close (for a week or so) whilst everything is finished off.

If you stand back a bit and don't 'remove' the tree this time, you could include Poddy with his ear nailed to the tree....
:bravo:Loving the 'Poddy' reference!

Know its gone down in the anals of forum history, alongside his prison wall Xmas gifts (It was Shrewbury, not Stafford! Ed ) But as someone who witnessed his protest in the square, and the resultant blood and the pasty expression on the legends face as the Fireman cut him free! it is particularly humorous!

:strange: A true Legend, and if they don't name the boozer No7 they should call it Poddies!

Shame they are not doing food! I won't charge for the menu recommendations! ;)

"The most famous [2], recent inhabitant was a petty criminal (he admitted to being a poacher)called Derek "Poddy" Podmore. He had a fan club in Philadelphia called Pod's People, selling badges to Americans. Just before Christmas in 1977, dressed as Santa Claus, and shouting "Merry Christmas", he sat on to the roof of Shrewsbury jail with a sack of cigarettes and tobacco for the inmates. He was arrested after an hour, by means of a Green Goddess[3] fire engine He also had himself nailed by the ear to a tree. He once appeared in court covered in manure wearing a dead pig as a hat. He also appeared in court dressed as a frogman - this followed his "warm-up" for a world frog swallowing record attempt in 1974 when he swallowed a live frog at a Market Drayton pub and washed it down with a pint of "black and tan"" (Taken from recorded notes from the time.)
It was this act of swallowing a live frog that he was fined at Stafford, and wanted to pay the fine in huge bag of coppers, and when this payment was refused he nailed his ear to a tree! The tree (and his ear) have been removed! (Any inaccuracy in this above Missive, apologies apparently he claims to had a minor knockon the napper! Ed )

I'm looking to visiting this new micro brewery. It's another great addition to Stafford. Thanks LLFC.

I have number of favourite pubs in Stafford now; Floodgate, Market Vault, Rose & Crown, Sun Inn and Swan. I'm sure this pub will become another favourite. All I need now is more drinking time so I can visit them all regularly!

Sounds like a good route for a pre season tour!

I like the name 7 Market Square, I think this new micro pub will be great.

With our summer now here, it's going to look wonderful in the evenings.

Here's my illustration of George Bate Gunmakers, which shows a tiny part of the garden.
Does anyone here know who owns the garden between 7 Market Sq. and Market Vaults?

I think I'll illustratate the building from another angle, much like the picture @Gramaisc posted, though it looks great wherever you stand!
Not sure if you realise but you have both of my properties in a single post. Market Square illustration and Tipping Street (avatar). I like it!!!
News on the bar......... the painters arrive next week and the bar is being built off site. I'm wondering if he will get all his jobs done in time for next weekend. I would say it is 50:50 at best.

You're just showing off now, ha.
Both fantastic Stafford buildings. Is rude to ask which other building in Stafford you may own?

Also, thanks for the I like it!!!, I appreciate that.

If you ever want copies of the illustrations, to put up on the @LLFC office walls, you know where I am!

I will have a word with the new guy from the pub pub to see if he would like an illustration (my shout). If you want to do an illustration of the Square from a different angle, let me know and you can use the top floor to gain an interesting perspective of the square!! On that front, BBC Radio Stoke are doing an outside broadcast next week and would like to interview the owner of the new business. To date he is hiding his identity but do you all think it is about time to go public????

I love these old buildings and wouldn't mind doing one last one....... need to recharge the batteries after the ground floor as two more floors are awaiting my attention!

I'd say next weekend is the perfect time to reveal himself, for those that haven't worked it out. Opening this next weekend then closing for a week before opening properly is perfect timing for my holiday, I'll be back for the grand opening!

Yes.
Perhaps there could be a competition where the first person to guess correctly wins a few pints.

So my guess is either one of the following.
Chris Lewis from the Lewis partnership.
One of the Sandy brothers.
The same person that has the other micro pub opposite the cinema.

Derek Holt?
