Leave or Remain?

Today it is 100 degrees in the shade

In Albania when the temperature reaches this figure it is traditional to do jigsaws

In the shade

gratë e popullore janë të zhveshur si ata e bëjnë jigsaws tyre

Proper Imperial degrees, I hope.

I have just seen my first Remain placard - in the countryside, too - and not inside a wickerwork structure.
All I saw on my travels between Stafford & Eccleshall today were 'Leave' placards....

Anyhow, OH wants to know why we had to use pencils to vote, one of his friends asked to use a pen & was asked to leave the polling station! (not in Stafford)

Did everyone use a pencil?

You can use a pen.

Polling stations may be staffed by people with "official minds", who think that their opinion of the rules is more important than the rules themselves.

A brief think about it will reveal that they shouldn't even be able to tell if you've used a pen or not.

Pencils are provided mainly because they are more reliable than pens......

I'm happy to use their pencil - I don't expect MI5 to be up all night rubbing things out - I would use their pen, if there was one. There is no legislation on the implement used to make the "mark" that signifies your vote.

We used a pen. In fact, someone had left one in the booth at Trinity Church.

There are people standing outside some polling stations handing out pens due to some conspiracy about pencil votes being changed after the fact, which ignores the reality that if the vote were to be rigged it would not be rigged by erasing out a few votes here and there.

I don't know if it's the real reason but I saw some discussion that suggested one of the reasons pens are not used is because they could have ink that disappears after the vote has been submitted, whereas that can't happen with pencil, so malicious parties could swap out the real pens with disappearing ink pens and nobody would be none the wiser.

As mentioned earlier - http://www.staffordforum.com/xf/index.php?threads/leave-or-remain.16841/page-29#post-311654 ..

The disappearing ink theory really only holds if you think you know what people's votes would be.

It is largely nonsense and paranoia - quite fitting with the campaigns that we have had.

You will never see your voting slip again - it would be a simple matter to have boxes of pre-filled-in slips available to dupe the counters with.

We could even hold the count in that big shed where they filmed the Moon landings....

Voted!

Never seen the polling station so busy, I'll be interested to see the turnout result locally, if the result is broken down in to areas

If your head says Remain but your heart says Leave, remember that one is specifically designed for thinking and the other is a pump.

A gentleman visiting the polling station decided to park his car in the entrance, preventing anyone in the car park from leaving. They had no choice but to remain.

Voted, took 2 1/2 hours!

Well 5 mins to walk to the polling station, 90 seconds to vote then the rest of the time shooting the breeze with folk we hadn't seen in a while. The lad was going frantic as he was expecting to do a spot of dogging on the chase after Mrs p and I had voted.

Not long to go now before we know the results. Will be interesting, whichever way we voted. I predict a close result of course, with Leave winning.
