Hopefully they might find the volume control for the Tannoy this time....

Well, it turned out to be a reasonable day in the end - I waited until the Somme Re-enactment phase of the weather had passed, before popping over and getting severely frisked on the way in.

Just as I passed the Main Gate and Guardroom, I immediately regretted not having a spare Form 252 in my pocket......

Some pictures will follow - all in all, it was a good day, despite the weather.

Pictures.

Last year, there was an upside down Union Flag flying over one of the fairground rides - that's almost fair(!) enough, though I would expect people that bother to fly a flag to at least have it the right way up, but, hey-ho.

However, I was dismayed to be confronted with this view as I walked through the Main Gate. I did quiz a few people through the day about who might be responsible for it, but, out of a mixture of loyalty and fear, I suspect, I could get no straight answer. I also suspect that nobody else noticed it, as I got a few blank looks from the people that I interrogated and it was still upside down as I left, two hours later.

The underfoot conditions were a bit iffy in places, after the wet morning, but, generally, it was OK.

If things had got out-of-hand, suitable equipment was available.

The main point of the day, for me, is the Gurkha Food Tent - and it did not disappoint.

Possibly as a result of the smaller than anticipated crowd, the portions were difficult to defeat....

..and were followed by the Kangaroo Kid Quad Display..

..this involved jumping over things on quad-bikes - which was OK..

..but then things got much more interesting, when "volunteers" were asked for, and a young lady who had the misfortune to have her birthday today, was flung over the fence into the arena - subsequently her friend and two lads were also persuaded.

Here they are, getting helmetted - birthday girl in grey top.

The first run was birthday girl, rather hidden here, being wheelied past her (by now ex-) friends.

Next, a lad was added and they were both whizzed round at some speed.

Eventually, all four "volunteers" were on, plus the rider, hanging off the side. The second girl was given a small cushion and plonked on the handlebars.

The final manoeuvre was an "attempted" jump which provoked some highly audible screaming and some rather colourful language from the ladies, that was picked up and amplified by the microphone in the rider's helmet - top stuff!

I'm not usually a great fan of these "stunt" affairs, but this really was most entertaining.

Helmets were returned and people were more grateful to be alive than they were before it all happened.....

Various bits of kit were lying about the place, available for inspection.

Somebody had the presence of mind to bring a fuel can, just in case.

JCBs are available in colours other than yellow.

Health and Safety on MOD sites can be a bit of a grey area - you need to be responsible yourself...

Some people made sure they weren't going to get bogged down.

Others seemed keen not to draw attention to where they had parked.

Any local builders worried about air-strikes might like to consider lowering their visibility.

The building work around the base seems largely complete now.

The Wessex is getting tired now - I wonder how long it will last?

The Harrier has never really had the presence that the old Javelin had.
