I think almost the opposite, all the new venues are better than the previous. Marks and spencer in particular is head and shoulders above what they had before. Looking forward to the new restaurants in the area, about time.

In regards to the rest of Stafford the council should follow suit with what other locations nation wide that dropped rates for independents. We should get the best of both worlds than, one area of town dedicated to the chains and the other a plethora of indys.

Stafford Borough Council have introduced the Stafford Town Centre Business Rates Relief Scheme designed to stimulate occupier interest in retail units in certain parts of the Centre. To qualify, businesses need to be "new to the area", that is not already located within the designated scheme geographical boundary. Start up businesses would be classed as such automatically. Eligible businesses can claim, for a twelve month period, a discount on the rates payable up to a maximum of 100% or £10,000, whichever is the lowest. The locations that qualify for this benefit are Crabbery Street, Gaolgate Place, Malt Mill Lane, Princes Street, Stafford Street, Gaolgate Street, the Guildhall Shopping Centre, North Walls (part) and Salter Street. Please note that certain other qualifications apply. For further details, interested parties should contact Mary Timmis, Economic Development Offices, Stafford Borough Council on 01785 619584 or by email at mtimmis@staffordbc.gov.uk.

Former knitts and needles and Cook's on Salter st are also under offer. This might depend on the new owners sorting out bloody north walls car park and opening it.

It may be working, as Oatcakes and Milkshakes in Stone is opening on Stafford Street

See all you doubting Thomas's - I told you more shops would open when word got around about Stafford being busier. There's a new ladies boutique opening in the old Century 21 shop too :)

It struck me on Saturday how busy it seemed walking through town. I know 'One Swallow, Summer Make' but with the opening of the new shops it gives reasons for people to shop in Stafford rather than travel a little further a field. Even more so when Primark opens.

The "Odessa Steps" down to the river seem to have survived but are totally fenced off. Is this intentional?

As here, when they were used for material storage during the building - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place...0x1b47b3d511d85808!8m2!3d52.806693!4d-2.12066 .

Is there going to be any attempt at making the river a positive benefit?

I'd noticed that. It seems a real shame that they've been treated as a hindrance and fenced off. Could have been a nice place to take lunch.

There is a gap in the 'final' fence, though there is a temporary fence blocking it - it won't be too hard to get over the permanent fence.

The whole river aspect seems a totally wasted amenity to me.

Who knows, even the former travel agents, hairdressers and Bella Italia on Greengate Street might finally get let although that might mean that the commercial landlords reduced the rents that they are asking.

Went into the new Primark this evening, I have to admit to being impressed both the size and stock and in particular the fit and finish which is really good. They have made a really good job of the layout and it looks really nice.

I would actually say it felt and looked more premium than the Marks store and if you took away the signage you would think that marks was the budget store from the shop fittings

Good addition for Stafford

I popped in this evening too and it's like the tardis, seems much bigger on the inside, less impressed by the youths near the underground carpark, one looked like he was having a pee whilst the others walked on.
