All the while the overtime bill for the wards is soaring. Some days, there is more bank and agency workers than permanant staff.

A lot of those 'bank' staff are the very same staff who work for the same organisation, the NHS. So it appears they don't mind shi**ing on their own company.

It's either St. Georges own in house Nurse Bank. Or. Medacs or Flame Lily. The latter 2 are last port of call because the obviously cost a lot more to hire the staff.

So they deliberately under staff then have to use their own bank staff at an increased rate? Or do they pay the same rate for bank staff as normal?

Not to mention the so called 'Managers' who happen to have acquaintances that run these agencies, it's all a mafia, government organisations or not, they all exploit the taxes we pay then bleet when they have to make cuts because of their overspend.

Not all those that are on the in house bank are employed by the trust. But, those that are, get paid their normal hourly rate + enhancements. A lot of bank staff came from NHSP, they transferred over when the contract stopped. If not emplyed by the trust, they get a lower rate of pay per hour + enhancements where necessary.
Flame Lily is the more expensive agency, these are the 'end of the line' so to speak when hiring people.

Do they do this because they don't have the available full timers, or because they don't rota enough originally?

I can't speak for the majority of the wards, but in most cases the use of bank staff is because of the increase of patients need. If a patient/service user/client is acutely unwell, then they may need 2 or 3 staff looking after them at all times. This may be fascilitated by normal ward staff for a while, but then you have to cater for days off, sickness etc.
There is an agency called Thornberry, they pay astronomical rates per hour. St. Georges doesn't use them, but I know County/DGH do.
