I have been parking there for a few months now as are many others. It is safe for other users, the road is wide and there are no parking restrictions.
I disagree that it is safe for other users... lots of kids cycle / walk along there on their way to school. The danger of them crossing in between park cars is a serious risk.

However, the negative of these schemes is that it pushes the car into other areas causing problems for the existing Status Quo.
whatever you want
Agreed. A displacement of commuters parking on Castletown to other parts of Stafford can only serve to engender "the type of guy that likes to wander round"

What you're proposing seems a good idea.

front page of the newletter today!

its interesting reading through this thread as my area is currently being consulted re: a permit parking scheme. although i dont have a car, it does still affect me with regards to my lodger, visitors and ultimately the attractiveness of the property when it comes to resale. (mind you, as if anybody wants to buy a house with a sodding spring running through it!)

seeing all the opinions here has been really enlightening- thank you. :)

From 26th October the station car park will be up Doxey Road (Plastics factory). As I understand it will still be 6 quid to park there despite then having to get a shuttle bus to the station. I can't see that a lot of regular travellers are going to bother with it, they'll seek parking close by either on-street or in Borough Council pay & displays which are within a few minutes walk (and cheaper).

Personally, I disagree. There are a number of kids who cycle and walk along there, but there is only a path on one side. Where there is a footpath available on both sides, there is road markings to discourage motorists to park there which is observed every day. This makes it safe for children to cross (and they do cross here).

I must say that I think people shouldn't park between the 2 roundabouts, at the back of the Rugby Club. People have also been daft enough to park on the actual roundabout too and have been rightly ticketed.

I think from the 26th it's going to be murder. Castletown will be overrun with cars trying to shove into spaces that don't exist, other car parks that used to be empty at 7am will be full causing those who used to park there at 7:30am to find alternative spaces etc etc etc. I think it is outrageous that they still want to charge £6 to park opposite the Universal despite being so far away from the station and having to use a Shuttle Bus and for the sake of other car parks/residents should be forced to reduce the cost.

I quite agree I think the whole town is going to be seriously effected. The roads are going to get further grid locked with additional cars on the road franticly looking for closer and free limited parking spaces in residential areas, with the residents ultimately having nowhere to park.

I strongly advise anyone who is going to be effected (and/or) or already is i.e. town residents and commuters to raise the matter with their local councillor so some pressure can be put on the faceless bureaucrats who appear to have no concern and apparent total disregard about the quality of life of the people who pay their wages.

Worth remembering that the station car park fiasco is being inflicted by the privatised railway - Virgin Trains along with Network Rail. David Kidney has been very voiciferous in pressing for the multi-storey to be built, so perhaps he could apply equal pressure in helping to minimise the disruption while construction takes place. Pressure certainly ought to be put on Virgin Trains to reduce the cost of parking whilst the temporary car park is in use.

Also... Virgin Trains / Network Rail are proceeding without planning permission as they've argued the car park is under their "permitted development rights", which is obviously a point of contention. The lack of any planning application means that the authorities are deprived of the opportunity to impose any conditions (such as temporary arrangements) that might normally be included in the granting of plannning permission.

Has anyone enquired how much an annual residents parking permit i likely to cost? i'd guess at least £150 though in reality it could be a great deal higher...........

am i the only one who assumed it was free, and that one was entitled to a proposed permit by virtue of being a castletownian?

note, i don't live on castletown, so this was pure assumption on my part, not simply wishful-thinking..

Nothing is free. Some things you have to pay for through your Council Tax, and some things you have to pay for again if you want them to actually do it...

oh no! thats one of the big rants in hillsborough is that you have to pay to have a permit that doesnt even guarantee you a space near your property...but it may reduce the risk of commuters parking near your property leaving you a greater chance of getting a space.

ill have to check what the proposed rate is in sheffield, but it is being viewed as a parking tax.

That's less than a £1 a week, surely a £1 a day would be a reasonable amount, and what if a non-permit vehicle parks is there a hotline to a parking attendant who arrives instantly?......

There's a bloke in Stone who'll do it privately....
