Liverpool population in 1930s - 800,000 +
Plenty of scope for re-expansion - back into a Northern Powerhouse.

The 800,000+ is for a bigger region than the City Council covers now, it seems.

No, it seemed to be in decline - developments promised 10 years ago no where to be seen. Which isn't to say it won't be a great place to be a university student, but there seems to be a substantial brain drain away from it for graduates.

Thats' interesting, and I know a lot of Scousers were devastated about Brexit because so much money has gone to Merseyside from the EU that would never have been forthcoming fom the UK government, so Brexit may well impact harder there. One of the positive's of Sheffield was the sheer number of students who stay there after finishing their studies beause they love the place and can clearly get work, yet on the Sheffield forum they bemoan the lack of highly skilled work. Maybe what you see depends on where you stand? I think Liverpool has a high-tech skillset and industries, especially if the net is spread to include Warrington.

i moved to stafford for the uni about 6 years ago, it makes me very sad to see my uni has closed down, i feel like i dont really belong in stafford now, even though lived here for years. it really is a let down to the town and community, houses will have to sell up that were student houses, shops will already be suffering. and it just makes the town very boring. I never wanted to go to stoke uni, i dont like the campus, the area, or people there to be honest. bad move in my eyes for the uni to close stafford, waste of a building. i do hope the building doesn't go to hs2 CRAP else it may be set on fire by a few locals lol

aw, that's a shame :( i moved to sheffield in 2004, hated everything about it, and moved back here in 2007.. the only good thing about my time there was that i met some poor girl who i dragged back to stafford, married, and have now lumbered with child..

mrs. db and i bonded over our mutual hate of sheffield, but even so i was surprised at how eager she was to move to stafford with me, given that we had only been courting for a couple of years.. we've now been here for nearly 10 years, and she says that she feels more at home in stafford than she has ever felt anywhere - it's a shame to hear that you haven't felt the same sense of belonging..

you're not alone...

Hull closed thier Scarbourough one too a few years back.

I'm just off to an open day where 165 student are registered for my talks (most other areas have 30 ish) and our areas application numbers are up 114% on this time last year, so the move to Stoke clearly hasn't putnpeopke off to study Games with us. Students also reported they were happy with the move to Stoke too.

It makes swnse to have as many students in one place as possible. It's nice to be working somewhere with a buzz about it again.

Although the University of Bristol were recently saying to expect the bottom 1/3 of universities to close due to Brexit which would include Staffordshire. Perhaps about time since the current form of higher education is more of a way of the government manipulating unemployment figures.

How do I edit this?

I'm curious as to which list you're working off? I've just had a quick look at Wikipedia which lists 392 UCAS registered institutions, so if Staffs is 69th that would make it top third? The Guardian league table lists 119 universities which would make it about half way.

I'd present match of the day in my undies :) if Staffordshire is in the top 1/3rd of any University ranking scale, or even 69th given that there are 24 Russell Groups ones.

Acc to the complete University guide, Staffs is 101/127,
http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings

The Guardian 2016, Staffs 83/119
https://www.theguardian.com/education/ng-interactive/2015/may/25/university-league-tables-2016

It doesn't even get a ranking in the TES which ranks 89.
https://www.timeshighereducation.com/student/best-universities/best-universities-uk

On those metrics Staffs is very vulnerable.

Ahem -
University league tables 2017

https://www.theguardian.com/education/ng-interactive/2016/may/23/university-league-tables-2017

We're 69th this year.

The others all take into account REF (Research Excellence Framework) as a metric - which is calculated every 5/6 years, next REF is 2021 - and actually we don't have that much European research (bits and pieces but nowhere near as much as other unis), no do we have much in the way of European students (very little Erasmus ties etc) so the effect of Brexit might be a bit more complex then simply we're done for.

As an institute we're also fairly responsive, and we're aware of a bunch of challenges to HE - more then just Brexit, so I wouldn't worry too much about us just yet.

Going back to the original subject, having been forced to move to work at Stoke I can say that the place is horrible. A dump compared to the Stafford campus.
I detest it up here as do most of my colleagues who've been forced to move. The campus sits in an almost 3rd world location full of litter, choking car fumes and even vomit. There are many unsavoury characters around the campus too. I would not dream of sending my children to the university now.
Stafford campus was a wonderful place to work... Stoke is just truly awful

Thats more what I'd heard TBH, I have a mate abroad at the moment on his year out who isn't relishing the idea of finishing his degree in Stoke and I know a few college students who decided to move away instead when they were planning on going to Stafford originally. Guess it depends who you talk to.
