Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Jonah

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Alms Houses
Tenterbanks
Plumbits
Eastgate Street
Mill Street?
Salter Street
Clark Street
The Island
White Lion Street

There may be others.
But all those are only half an hour stay aren't they? What if you need to stay longer? Do you move your car around?

I think The Island is still two hours and White Lion Street one hour. Worth checking, though. I've always thought the difference was a bit sneaky and probably leads to a few mistaken overstays in White Lion Street.

I don't do it much* and half an hour is plenty for the odd occasional park for me.

*A brief assessment suggests that the last time was in June, and that that was the first this year.

Normally, I would park at Lidl, do whatever in town - and then get the comestibles upon my return there.

**Another brief assessment would suggest that all "in town parking" by me has actually been for other people's benefit...

Wickes car park usually does it for me, two hours is plenty of time to get round Stafford unless accompanied by Mrs T.
Used the Primark lay by for most of an afternoon a couple of weeks ago.

I use the side area at Lidl - a bit less likely to get nudged, only a hundred yards further to walk and you can park in the shade in the summer.

You can sneak through the railings to get to Lidl's door without going all round on the ramp.

I hope it isn't totally destroyed by the WAR.

I would struggle to fill two hours in town - even including a Chainsburger stop....

This is a very useful spot and I will also miss this safe free parking if it's lost. I say safe as you're unlikely to get tw*ts who park too close and then let their kids fire open their doors smashing them in to the side of my car. Can usually get a space with no-one in the spaces alongside!

It appears that there is going to be some sort of temporary permit parking scheme for more, and longer, on-street parking in North Walls and Salter Street - with permits administered by the shops.

It does have the potential for some chaos, I suspect.....

Free Parking 2 hours MAX!
Working with the county council, we are launching a new parking scheme to help the local businesses in the North Walls area, while the Kingsmead parking lot is closed.

The county council created 37 parking spaces around the area, which includes the taxi rank and double yellow lines on Salter Street, loading bays and the 30 minute parking spaces across from the SDVS centre on North Walls. There is an actual map of these spaces, but no signage on the street.

What you need to do is get a parking permit from 1 Stop Supermarket, Malt Mill Lane. Bean enCounter has a few as well. Sign in and either provide ID or a £10 deposit. Be sure to place them on your dashboard and return the permit within 2 hours.

The permits will be available from 12 today.

This scheme is running until January 16th, 2016.

Any questions, please feel free to ask.

I wonder if anybody will get done whilst they are returning the permit?

I have it on good authorty that Marks & Spencer wanted to stay in the town centre by converting the old big coop store, and the Council wouldn't let them. I guess the council wouldn't have been able to make as much money from the new place without M&S. I stand by my opinion that all these stores now in the new centre could have been accomodated in, nd bought life back, to our sadly neglected town centre :( Our council is rotten :(
