ASDA introducing Pay and display parking

Parasitic freeloaders? Pretty sure free parking was part of Tesco's planning consent. Thought it was at Asda too.

It will remain free - on payment of your ASDA shopping you will get the refund at the till :)

This was on the cards after Riverside opened. Going to make the parking at the leisure centre even tighter.

Why? It's already pay & display at the leisure centre in normal car park charging hours ...............?

I'll probably just stop going there. Rarely have a lot pound coins in my wallet nowadays, with the general turn towards card payments. Rather drive to tesco than plan my change to pop in for a few bit's and pieces.

It might make sense for Adsa to have the option to charge the full receipt price and then hand the parking cash back, rather than just knock the charge off the bill, thus the regular cashless shopper could keep the necessary cash in the car, rather than having to hunt for it every time.

This is not about freeing-up parking spaces for Asda customers, it's about making money. By charing £1 for up to 2 hours, nothing will be solved. People will still happily pay £1 to park there and go over to eat at Nando's / shop at Primark etc.

If it was genuinely about keeping it more exclusive for Asda customers, then the charge would be £2 for 2 hours to discourage others from parking there. Asda customers should be quite happy to pay £2 knowing they'll get it back at the checkout anyway.
Agreed. At £ for 1 hours that is 60p cheaper than the council car parks. Asda are basically saying that they know people park there and walk into town, so they might as well make some money out of it. Clever move and undercutting the council.

Maybe you'll get a choice, the same as in Sainsburys - 'in yer hand, or off the bill Sir?'

Or spend 90 mins in town then pop into ASDA for a few bits and pieces and a refund, seems better that the current deal where the free parking is for shoppers only.

It was only a matter of time before Asda re-introduced a parking charge. It's not a surprise given how many people park there and do not shop in store.

Yea but that was only promised to get the building or whatever consent, now they have got it

You have never tried parking at the leisure centre early evening then?

No. When DD was there 4 times a week for the gymnastics club (before it moved) we used to cycle down.

I'm baffled that people feel the need to drive everywhere and then go to a gym to use the running/cycling machines to get fit. Why not just walk and cycle? Save the money and the pollution the car inflicts on others?

Anywya back to parking at ASDA. Car use is so 20th century :)

Asda has had little option to but to introduce this charge. The staff from the shops in the new development were parking there all day for free.

Well is that because they don't monitor the 2 hours free parking policy then? In Tesco you can park for 3 hours but they have cameras to ensure you are charged if you park any longer.

Apparently they were between contracts with their parking controllers. The new firm did ticket a number of cars last week.

Can you get your refund on the Fast Lane or do you need to go through a normal till for a "human being" to give you your refund?

I think its a bit of a p**s take saying that you have to spend a minimum of a £5 to get your parking refunded?

What if all you need is a few items that cost a couple of £ and that you're only in there for 10 minutes?

as @Lucy has just mentioned, why not utilise the number plate readers to enforce the 2 hours free parking?

Well it's their car park and they can do as they wish. Other car parks and other supermarkets are available.

I agree.

It's their car park for their customers.

I don't suppose it would have been an issue if people had parked up, nipped to M&S and then come back and done their shopping at Asda.
Returning to the car without even shopping there is just taking the mickey.

It's a bit like someone parking up on your drive and then going off to visit the neighbours 3 doors down.

That's pretty much what happens to my mother-in-law who lives in Littleworth. So many people parking right outside her house, sometimes across the drive, and leaving their car there all day. Someone has even left their car outside from mid afternoon to 8am the next morning.

If that was my drive the car would've been trashed. Not by me though, obviously, I could never condone vandalism, but I'd just happen to be elsewhere with an alibi when it happened so wouldn't see a thing :strange:
