ASDA introducing Pay and display parking

Ticket machines have been installed in the car park but are currently covered up and non-operational.

I think it's going to make matters worse. At £1 for 2 hours parking where you don't even now have to be claiming to shop at Asda, not only will those that already abused it use it, but also those that felt it would be wrong to do so previously as now it's a paid car park there's nothing for them to feel bad about.

If I start struggling to park and shop at Asda, I won't "go to tesco instead" as others have said - I'll start a petition and try to get the charge increased as it should be from the outset. Let's face it - it's no longer a car park for Asda customers... it's just another bloody car park!

I agree with you, increase the charge, make it more expensive than the new multi storey and encourage people over there but retain the £5+ refund at the till.

It would be more simple to just close the access from asda to the pedestrian crossing, put a fence up. i generally dont shop at asda but the few times i do the car park is always packed and the majority of people leaving their cars head for the crossing rather than the store. It takes the piss when youve got kids under 4 and need to get them out of their car seats in a standard width parking space and you see people in the mother and baby spots with no kids and heading straight into town. Arseholes.

I will quite ofter nip in there on my lunch break, park, run in and back out again within 2 or 3 mins and buy a £3 / £4 meal deal.

Guess I won't be doing that anymore.

SBC have started charging for parking on Sunday now so you will now have to pay on the Chell Road car park (Sainsbury's). It was free before.

Opportunistic money making by asda. Undercutting the council and taking their revenue. Pity Stafford council won't learn the lesson

I used to be of the opinion that it was sad of Asda being arsey about a bit of free parking considering how many millions of pounds gets spent there but that was before the Riverside shops were opened over the other side of the road. Those who used Asda then walked into town or used the leisure centre was pretty minimal but now a lot park there and walk over to the new shops.
Bringing in parking charges will annoy a number of customers and Asda might lose some custom but I struggle to see what else they can do. I imagine over time people will get used to paying just as they do at Sainsbury's.

The solution is to make every single car park in town completely free of charge. That way, it will be a level playing field and people will park where they need to so they can visit the appropriate place.

It'll never happen though.

It's more likely that all car parks will be chargeable and at the same cost per hour.

Is it? That's good. I thought it was all car parks but I've now been told that not all car parks will be charging on Sunday but I don't know which ones.
as a rough rule of thumb the closer it is to new riverside the longer the charges are in force and the more it will cost per hour

That's wank. About the only time I go to the new centre is after 6 so I can park at the Civic Offices car park for free on my way home from work or on Sundays. Nothing would possess me to go during peak Saturday. Now the only time I'll go is if i'm incorporating it into a big Asda shop,

Another point to Asda for their strategy then I guess.
