The curse of 41a Gaol Road

Phoenix Music on Gaol Road has a small premises attached to the right of it, but it seems that no business seems to be able to survive in that space. Unsure if it is the large group of smokers from Phoenix Music putting people off, but in my time, if I recall we have had a reptile/aquatic beasts shop, then a sweet shop, then it went to a record shop that never appeared to be open, followed briefly by a retro/vintage clothing shop, and as of this morning it seems someone else is moving in there.

I hope they make a go of it.

(Trying to keep this isolated to 41a Gaol road so as not to make it into a failing business megathread)

I think some of those went into the premises to the left of Pheonix Music Main if you're looking at it from the street (I'm sure that's where Scales and Tails was) - I think there's always an issue where you have combo shop with one entrance - it always looks a little bit off and uninviting. I like the fact that the street view changes the shops mid stride.

I don't think anything compares to the random shop location history of the tiny shop next to Stafford Fireplaces (which randomly you can go INTO on Street View and have a look around if fireplaces are your thing)

I always want businesses to succeed, just seems as if that shop has a very short life cycle. The new one going in, I am unsure at this point what it is. I will report when I pass it on my walk home this evening.

Here's a very simple test to work out if a business there will succeed.

Imagine you are the customer.

Imagine they are on foot, is it near the centre of town? nope FAIL.

Imagine they are in a car, is parking free and easy? nope FAIL.

If your business is in selling bulky or heavy goods then you need to be near to where people can hop on the bus or get into a car.

I can't see that those shops stand a chance, too far out, rip off parking charges. Most people would just think "sod it, I'll look online".

The building on the corner , where the Coral place is now..... Did that used to be a pub sometime in the past? When we parked behind Phoenix Music you could make out some sort of writing on the side of the wall (Can't remember what it was now, just had a guess as to what it was as it was very feint, but the sort of Hanson, Mitchells Butler sort of writing I've seen in the past on pub walls)

Where Coral is now was the Co-op Funeral Parlour* - you can still see it in the stonework - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.8...qQ1vV5P2CXnt_fHKsw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1 .

Round the corner is the remains of Aston's advert - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@52.8...eGilnO75nTr7fqyTXQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1 - they were purveyors of furniture.

The Four Crosses pub is still there - opposite Coral's.

* They moved down to the old Swinson's corner shop at the Silkmore Lane roundabout many years ago.

Ah, that's it....'Astons' on the wall. Me , being me , assumed it was some kind of brewery name :D

Used to frequent The Four Crosses quite a bit in my younger days ( as well as The Hop Pole and other pubs. Good for a bar crawl with them all being in close staggering distance to each other )

Well the curse strikes again, it appears as of this morning Darts and Crafts are no longer in that shop and it is now empty.

What a shame, I popped in there only a couple of weeks ago to buy some darts, it was a great little shop :(

Not to mention the bar brawl.
