Quite right. Stafford people will not do anything but moan about the town and shops shutting down. It is because they don't use them so how does that mean they are intelligent ..?
I did say that Stafford people are "generally intelligent" - and they are. A good proportion of the population are educated and hold positions of responsibility. People here are also generally comfortably off financially. A small proportion of course are cock wombles, as in any population.

Stafford is far from run down. The millions in redevlopement within the centre and surrondings goes to show the efforts gone into improving the region after some gloomy years.

You should try travel a bit if you think stafford is bad. Crewe one of the locations I commute too is shocking.

I must admit they have let the town centre go a bit in terms of servicing. Patchwork of block paving and tarmac. No doubt in the not too distant future funding for such things will have come full circle and fixed when budget allows.

Generally speaking stuff like that gets done during Labours time in power, its a spend/save cycle. In recent years this has gone tits up, both not giving a damn.

When the paving was laid, some bloke went to considerable effort to carry the pattern through these awkwardly angled covers - when the tarmac patch was done, they didn't see it being worth bothering with the little bit to at least make it rectangular.

I do note, though, that some work is occurring on the drainage situation in the block paving at the Butler's Bell end of Gaolgate Street.

I have to say that although I tend to stick up for and defend Stafford against detractors, I was in the precinct behind the old Woolworths walking down towards the market last weekend and have to admit that had I have been a first time visitor to Stafford my first impression could only have been "what a sh*th*le". Conversely if anyone approaches from the other end via the new development, moving on to Mill Street and towards the market via St Mary's it gives a totally opposite view. Goes to show, I suppose this could apply to most large towns.

A fair observation..................

Most visitors to my work premises tend to comment on the ghost supermarket and the empty car park as well.

A 'large' town is a question of perspective I suppose. Where I grew up in Wiltshire (Great Cheverell pop. 500ish at the time) the nearest town was Devizes, (pop. 11, 715) the nearest 'large' town was Trowbridge (pop. 33,108) and the nearest city was Salisbury (pop. 40,302) all of which are a fair bit smaller than Stafford with its 68,472 residents.

On the other hand it was also pretty close to Swindon which, with 209,156 people living there is a really large town.

My town in Ireland has rather fewer people than many towns here - Wikipedia says there's 1,203 in the urban area - "urban", for God's sake....

Nobody ever refers to it as a village.

If Stafford was in the Republic, it would be the fifth largest population centre.

The town centre is a town, but what about the surrounding areas. Isn't there around 120k in the borough? I use all the amenities of Stafford, despite not actually living within the outer suburbs.

Some of the older residents of Littleworth can still be heard referring to 'the village'.

I knew somebody who was born around 1920, near the shop in Queensville - to her, Stafford started as you crossed the railway line.

Stafford is a town of two halves in the main, the affluent south and the less affluent north, this reflects the state of the nation in my opinion!!!

Well comparing town population stats a couple of the largest have over 200,000 ( I.e. reading about 220,000). Many have populations of over 150,000 plus.

So if about 220,000 is the biggest.

So cateogising small, middle and large ranges(thirds), with 220, 000 the top figure in the large range, then quite clearly Stafford with a population of around 65000 come under the small category as it falls within the max figure in the small range which would be a population of up to over 73000.

At the very best it could be categorised as a mid sized town.

distance wise it is tiny compared to alot of places, even more so when looking at the town centre on its own.

Not even going to get involved with the ridiculousness of towns with cathedrals known as cities :)
