You have certainly put your finger on the attitude of Stafford people - Let's not buy this good quality item from a (slightly) upmarket shop, let's go across the road and buy a cheap imitation from the reject shop because that's good enough for me.

Why are you still here?

But that's the point, again. I am not settling for it am I, I am actually doing something about it. It is you people who are saying Stafford is acceptable, not me, I am pointing out its many flaws to you but YOU are settling for it, I am not.

What utter tripe. You are absolutely full of it. What are you doing exactly, or is telling all peasants of Stafford on a forum the extent of you doing something about.
??
I must say what great strides you have made

Well I must say I don't hold out much hope for you as you can't even get out of a crappy town. It doesn't take that much you know people move areas all the time. I guess your family are just so proud, or does it come down to the fact they think differently.

People, just stop feeding the sad and bitter old troll, and it might go clip-clopping back under its bridge. For someone who hates the town they sure spend a lot of time on a forum about the town. Why not go on to the Kensington and Chelsea forum, or the Tunbridge Wells forum dahling? I'm sure they're almost up to one's exacting standards.

That is total bullshit.

You are doing precisely NOTHING about it besides moaning on and trolling this forum.

Process flow for how things happen on the forum;

1. Everyone has a healthy conversation.
2. A certain individual pipes up with some bilge
3. People get wound up
4. A certain individual carries on
5. Admin jumps in smacks said certain individual down
6. Certain individual crawls back into their cave
7. Everyone else carries on....
8. And repeat.....

I was just working out how many hours you'd need to work to directly manage 400 people. So a 1-2-1 at least once a month for an hour (should be fortnightly really), a mid year and end of year appraisal, these should be 2 hours at least. Wow, 800 days in a year.

Not sure on who you have worked for, but over ~30 years in IT I have probably had less than one appraisal every year, and sometimes they might have reached 2 hours. Certainly no monthly, let alone fortnightly, 1-2-1.

I think things are changing nowadays.

My feeling is they might, but probably not for the better. If an appraisal is done then probably by someone with less impact on the future, and far less likely for any notice to be taken of it.

I have never had a 1-2-1 that I haven't asked for; certainly no regular ones.

We're FCA regulated, I think that makes a difference, plus we've become employee focused.

My better half works for a bank. They do get a yearly appraisal, but given how many people they are trying to make redundant nothing useful will come of them

Why "400 people"? . . . . <<<< ETA Pls Ignore this bit. Gramaisc's kindly pointed me to the relevant post.

In my experience in public sector ICT, managers would manage around 3, 4 or 5 middle-managers, so 3, 4 or 5 1-to-1s. At the lowest level, managers that did them probably had no more than a dozen staff 1-to-1s to do each. And they were done annually and usually as part of an appraisal, though more often would not have been a problem.

Why did you remove your avatar?

You chose one, and now you appear to have 'unchosen' it.

Did you see it as being somehow unnecessarily 'intimate'?

Why would you see that as a 'problem' in need of redress?

If it's any comfort at all, i rather like you - obviously i'm slightly disappointed that you are not doing quite as much as I am in the 'Make Stafford Great Again' © campaign - but i'm sure you're doing your best. For whatever that's worth.

Never a dull moment and all that.
