Monsoon Stafford to close.

Just noticed a to let board placed above the Monsoons unit in town, so that'll be another national brand leaving the high street soon. It's also a bit more unfortunate, as unlike when Burton n the like moved, this one isn't being placed in another store.

Some detective work has also shown that the own Accessorize in town, with some stores becoming "Monsoon Accessorize", but their other store is far too small to accommodate that. Unless they've bought bigger premises ?

Edit - actually, scrap that thought, the company decided that idea was an unworkable disaster. And decided to begin to axe them all.

So yeah, in a nutshell, Monsoon Stafford days are numbered .

Ted Manders, head of planning and regeneration at Stafford Borough Council, conceded that there was the danger a North/South divide could open up in Stafford.

However he feels it would be a short-term issue and that a joint study by DTZ and Urbed has been commissioned to report on how to best support the north part of the town centre.

The study’s findings are due to be published in the summer.

Getting some shops into Kingsmead would help, then maybe the old m&S would become a viable location again too.

I'm amazed Monsoon / Acsessorisze as a whole is still going - I've only ever brought 2 dresses from there (and a handful of things from Accsessorize) - a bridesmaid's dress and my wedding dress, and that was in the sale - they can have some lovely things, but at a premium price that put them out of reach for most people.

How about a HIGH SPEED tram system running the length of Greengate and Gaolgate ?

"Soon"

Millets has been To Let for ages too. I suspect they stick around until they find someone to let out/sell the property to.

.

I have never been able to get my head around this type of thing. We pay people lots of money and all they do is pay someone else even more money to tell them what they should do. The report then almost always is non committal as the people getting paid so much money want to cover their backsides so they can't be blamed. The person that we pay then takes that report and gives it to a group of other people that we pay because they don't have the guts/authority/know-how to make a decision themselves. This collective of people that we pay then pick out single lines of the report that appeals to them personally, or to the party they support and use the fact that they have paid someone lots of money, (ergo it must be the truth), to tell them that what they wanted to hear in the first place was the right direction to go, even though the report could actually also say the exact opposite.

I've a few dresses and tops from Monsoon, and really like Accessorize, but I only ever shop in both stores when there's a sale on. I know I'm not alone in doing that.

I noticed on my last trip to Birmingham that they'd closed the Monsoon in the Bullring, so maybe it's a national policy rather than just Stafford's store not doing well.

There's still a store in Grand Central, which is a joint one with Accessorize, so I guess that'll be my store of choice next sale.

I'm sad to read this. I buy a lot of items in Monsoon. This only really leaves Wallis for me now since Next seem to have employed Stevie Wonder to design their womens' clothes. Meh :crossarms:

Accessorize is a shop my gf tends to visit fairly regularly for little bits of jewellery/hair type things and purses.

That said, we do most of our shopping in Birmingham since there's a much broader range of stores that suit our needs and the accessorize in grand central always seems busy.

I like the new shops in Stafford and it certainly means I spend more money in the town than I did previously, but the loss of big brands is pretty disconcerting.

Ted - should have a look at the report - SBC commissioned a couple of years ago - which strongly advised not to sell off the Riverside land for development. Guess the reason quoted - it would contribute to the decline of the county Town.

The planners had a discussion with Councillors who would both experience some difficulties in winning awards for insight - and went ahead with the plan. This included appearing in the papers citing the wonderful Riverside development from the top of the replaced Tesco car park. This was not surprising due to the new retail destination looking very similar to a shed.

The majority of the retailers relocated from other areas of the Town. Jobs creation eh. What next close down the Shire Hall and proceed to develop a new history centre - just waiting for the next landmark decision

Has Ted gone - what a shame probably appointed someone suitably competent to take over
