What are you listening to right now?

Rick Wakeman was on 5 Live with Danny Baker this morning.

He told a story about needing to pay rent of £8, so going down to the studios where he could pick up £2 for a quick addition to the post-production of whatever might be needed - hoping to get four of them but nothing was going.

Just as he was about to give up hope he was offered a full session, that would pay £9, later that evening. So he went to the pub, figuring that he had £1 over, for,a few bevvies.

When he got back to the studio it was T.Rex getting ready to record -

- and he asked what they wanted.

Marc Bolan said he wanted a glissando after the first few bars - Wakeman said surely you could just do that yourself? - Bolan said do you want the £9 or not?

It is the only piano piece on the track.

He was in the Coop on Holmcroft Road on Friday morning. Silver trousers and shoes. Very polite

If i had the time and space, i'd like to devote some of it to my thesis that Graceland was the beginning of the end of Apartheid.

In the mean time

It's been a while since I listened to this version. Quite nice, I hope you'll agree.

Another interesting one. (FF to 1:20)

ETA This one's a bit closer to the original.

OK, so I’ve played air guitar to ’Napalm Death’ - but hey, Studio Tan has a softer, gentler side too, exemplified by this haunting ballad.
There was a schmaltzy film made in 1971 called ’Summer of 42’ - a teen coming-of-age story set against America’s entry into WW2 for which Michel Legrand wrote the theme tune. Later, a husband and wife team of lyricists wrote some words and called it ‘The Summer Knows’. Down the years it’s become something of a standard recorded by dozens of artistes, one of whom was Johnny Mathis. I’m not a particular fan of Mathis but I think his version, together with this arrangement, is really poignant.
