Me dear ol' Da could only really give you specifics for the Swedish budget.

Certainly there was, in the Cold War era, an enormous amount of 'strings' attached to 'Aid' from the usual suspects - UK, France, and the USA, we're all looking at you... - whereby big 'aid' funded projects like hydro-electric-massive-infrastructure type arrangements were essentially predicated upon the fact that the 'arrangement' would be 'facilitated' by UK/French/US companies and financed accordingly.

I know for a FACT, though i am once removed, that in the 1960's the University of Dar es Salaam was glazed with money from China. Why? Because the money to do the same job from the USA - stipulating US materials & fitters with a contract that only qualified US fitters could make any repairs - did NOT stack up. China was in its 'little red book' phase, it was doing its 'hard' power softly - its 'Aid' came without any economic strings whatsoever.

On the back of that, i do have an original 1967 'little red book', which was given to everyone 'on site' at the time.

'Overseas Aid' is not, and never has been, altruistic.

And the former, former Top Shop and Top Man building opposite the former M&S is up for auction. I can't remember the auction house but whilst looking, I came across an auction (6th Feb) for the Princes Street buildings - the Cash Converters block.

Has been for sale since before chrimbo, when I asked Christmas week they said they were not closing, but we have heard that before with businesses time will tell.

In fact I reported the oversized sign, on a listed building of that design I wonder the regs for such a thing on that build, let alone it looks like a good breeze will rip it off and into someones face like the sign above the amusements on goalgate street.

Rent or sale - twenty grand if you want to rent it for a year.

Sale is POA.

If you are some bloke in London, managing a property portfolio, which has assets in some one-horse town that you've hardly heard of, then a large part of your importance comes from the value of the assets in your portfolio. Some of the alleged value of those assets is determined by the annual rents that can be expected. Dropping those rents will impact adversely on the asset values, and subsequently your value as an asset manager.

The above reasoning is obviously bonkers and rubbish, but may be a fair reflection of some perceptions that matter much more than ours do.

Your lack of attention to detail, and entire disregard for the niceties of the grammatical rules of the English language used to really piss me off.

It still does, but it used to too.

My mate was the manager at cash converters until very recently. He's now lost his job after 5 years of working there.

The neighbouring block (above the milkshakes and oatcakes etc) has recently had planning permission granted to convert the upper floors to residential development.

As ive stated repeatedly on here, i am huge fan of converting unused upper floors of buildings in the town centre to residential development - it brings people back into the town; provides much needed housing and increases natural surveillence of the street scene.

The freehold of Brittania House in Eastgate Street is also for sale. The agents are also suggesting it is ideal for conversion to apartments.

I thought Cash Convertors were one of the more successful retailers in Stafford. Are they looking to relocate to somewhere with better footfall?
