Sleepmasters

Just been to B&Q and noticed that the final unit there is going to be a Sleepmasters. No signs saying when it will be opening,it looks like work has just started. Got to be honest i have never heard of them!

I spotted this and immediacy thought, 'Oh yay - another bed place.'

How do bed / carpet outlets keep going? Whenever I have been in one I have been the only potential customer in there. Hence you are immediately wrestled to the ground by half a dozen over eager sales assistants. It's like a chase scene from Shaun of the Dead. 'Ugg, customerrrrrrrrr.'

I always assumed they were run by one big parent company - that's why It didn't matter if you 'shopped around' and they can open so close to each other.

I'm not sure, I've never brought anything from any of them, but we do need a new mattress soon - which I suspect will be more expensive then a new bed!

Heartilty recommend memory matresses. Paid 250 for our double - sounds expensive but worth every penny! Provides good quality kipping.

thought this was as good a thread as any to ask this:

i need a new mattress, and haven't really got a clue what i'm looking at.. all the mattresses i have had in the past have just come with a bed, or been provided for me (renting furnished property), so this is the first time i have had to buy one.. christ, they're expensive!

i've had a look round sleepmasters on the hough, dreams on greyfriars, and co-op in town, but the cheapest was about £199 and none seemed particularly special (or particularly bad, for that matter)..

what about online retailers? the problem there, of course, is that you can't test them out before you buy, but they seem a fair bit cheaper.. for example:

http://www.bedworld.net
http://www.sleepingsolutions.co.uk

anyone got any tips? surely if i just buy something that is "medium" firmness and a recognised brand like "silentnight" i can't go wrong?

whatcha reckons? :haw:

The same applies, fairly obviously, to sofa warehouses, but the one that I really don't understand is tiles - how are there so many tile outlets in Stafford? They'll soon outnumber the pubs.

On the subject of few, if any, customers. For more years than I care to remember I have been checking the bathroom showroom on Stafford Street ( Dolphin, I think - where Mothercare used to be ) and I have never seen as much as a single potential customer in there. Once, when I was going past some years ago, I saw a woman in there talking to the 'shopkeeper' ( for want of a better description ) and I knelt down at the door, pretending to tie my shoelaces, in order to overhear their conversation, only to find out that the 'customer' was merely a friend who had popped in to show off her new child. Presumably they do sell something now and then - or is it all a front for the Russian Mafia?

Well DB if you have any joy let me know i need a new one!!!

I keep shopping round but only find em round the £150-£200 mark

Is that a Moomin?
we paid £250 for our last one and its lasted almost 10 years whereas the one that came free with our first bed barely made it past the two year mark. I think given as you will be spending anywhere up to a third of your life on it a bit of cash thrown its way is only going to be a good thing. Cheap mattress' are a false economy when you think of all the days off due to sleep deprivation and bad back ^-^
You prob will not get a decent one for under the £200 mark :P

Or in the case of students, two thirds...
I think you may be underestimating the possibilities. Some years ago, one of the inmates of a student house that I administer was never seen in outdoor clothing during the whole year that he lived there. I noticed after the first three months that I had never seen him progress beyond the dressing gown stage and so I started keeping a more systematic mental note.

on the subject of mattresses, what's all this about "memory foam"? everyone seems to rave about it, like it's mana from mattress-heaven, but the concept doesn't sound very appealing to me..

surely one wouldn't want a mattress to fashion itself in one's image and stay that way? that would be like sleeping in a shallow you-shaped jelly mould lol.. and what about if you like to sit in bed watching tv? surely the added pressure would cause an ass-print to bury itself deep within the foam?

am i missing something? has anyone here experienced this memory foam, and would recommend it?

It does mould to your shape, but not forever, only whilst you stay in that position then it bounces back....

Kind of like bucket seats in cars that cradle and support you, or those insoles that mould to the shape of your foot so all of your foot is in contact taking the pressure, not just the few points that are in contact if the insole is flat.

thanks, +1 skill for good knowledge

there's a chap on ebay selling these for a pittance (~£150) - he's got 100% positive feedback, been trading for 5 years, and everyone on hotukdeals is spunking over how good they are, so i reckon i'm gonna go down that route..
