Argos in town moving into Sainsbury's.

Well this is annoying, I always preferred to use Sainsburys due to its close proximity to my house after work, Lidl is alright but doesn’t stock the vast choice Sainsburys does... and it’s pretty obvious out the two, the Sainsburys store would be axed given that it’s older and smaller.

Announcement on news today says no stores of either brand will be closed. Sainsbury's say they will be able to offer lower prices as a result of the merger.

I think they were careful to say that "no stores of either brand would close as a result of the merger" (or words to that effect). But three years down the line, after they've looked at the balance sheets, who's to say?

And they were talking about a 10% reduction in prices, but that's 10% off Sainsbury's higher prices and 10% off ASDA's lower prices.

bear in mind the official comment of " we dont have any plans to make anyone redundant" is the same type of Tory speak used when they want to actually do it , but use the those terms to bypass the flack til later , then do it.

Same as there’s no plans to hold a general election.... I hope they keep to their word though, I like having both stores about.

The Michael Edwards technique.

"Why did you tell the committee three weeks ago that you had no plans for redundancies at British Leyland and then announce thousands a fortnight later?"

"Well, we knew we were going to do it, but the plans weren't finalised at that stage."

I was only telling you what it said on the news... I know all about the top brass saying one thing and doing another. That's how I was made redundant a few years back.

I can 100 percent confirm that within the first 2 months of the new year , Argos in gaolgate place will be closing and be relocated to within Sainsbury's

Although it is taking forever and maybe I got carried away with my 100% before..... this is very much still in the pipeline.
It is due to take place later this year and staff have been notified, however I suppose this could all change with the news today

Cant help wondering how much longer h&b will stay there, the whole place is looking very shabby, if they moved onto kingsmead it might be the precursor for a major redevelopment of the sheridan site to totally change and revitalise the whole area north of the market square.

They are right in what they saying but you can bet the CMA will force them to offload in certain areas where there is a heavy bias to the two brands,.,,,

I can't imagine the Sainsbury's store closing though, that Asda car park is heavily used, where would all the customers fit?

(based on my years-old opinion, I've not used that Asda car park for a long time due to the effort it takes (took?) to find a space)

If they close either store it makes Stafford more appealing to Morrisons IMO, they'd be mad to do so as the town is big enough to support 3 supermarkets even with the new Aldi stores.

Stafford is a growth town and the amount of housing is set to increase for years to come. I think both supermarkets will be fine. They appeal to very different shoppers.

It won't be up to the company to decide if they keep a store open or not should it go ahead..
