"St Leonard’s Works in Stafford was originally built in the 1960’s during English Electric’s ownership. The site became part of GEC (The General Electric Company) during 1968 and over the years was often known as either Measurements or the M.R.I. (Meters, Relays and Instruments). On 22 March 1989 became part of GEC ALSTHOM, an Anglo French Joint Venture. On 22 June 1998 became part of ALSTOM with global HQ in Paris and on 2 November 2015 the Stafford Grid and Power Businesses became part of GE (General Electric, an American Company)."

I spent 24 years working there , from leaving school in 1972 to leaving to have my son in 1996. Got some good memories . With not going past it very often these days , didn't realise it was being razed to the ground until reading it on here.
(Still got some of the tinsel from the good old days of the canteen / bar being opened up when we finished for christmas . Woke up hours after staggering home to find myself wearing most of the christmas tree decorations :D)

Yeah it took me by surprise when I happened to drive past and saw they had started. I didn't quite top your achievment - started in 88 when I finished college and handed notice in 6mths later when the twat I worked for in the Sub Contract Dept refused to let me go on holiday for a week!

I worked in Store 14 all by myself - there was either no work at all or too much - not much in between!
When there was no work I was also bollocked for talking to the girls on the production line in our dept.
I earned £88 a week (£82 after deductions) and I seem to recall others that had been there for years were not on much more and somehow had to support a family. One chap I knew used to make a Q2? pressure switch or something and he paced himself between working and secretly reading a book so that we was always guaranteed Sat overtime and time+half.

I was not too keen on the "more than 3mins late, lose 15min of your pay" rule - did this survive until you left? I can't imagine they have it at the posh new place at Redhill? I wonder if they all leave at 4:33 like we used to when I was there too?!

Anyway, although it was not for me, I am sure there a many more people in Stafford who have enjoyed it there.

I started in the offices in the 401 machine shop. My boss stuck a piece of paper up on our glass door to stop me and the lads outside waving to each other ...
I was once hauled into my bosses office when Doug Gadd , the BIG boss, did his rounds at christmas and caught us "Fraternising" with the lads on the shop floor. I remember about 20 of us piling into someones mini outside The Vine , crawling past the gatehouse to get back into work, and having a go on the drilling machines ...a wonder I have any fingers left !:roll:

The 'lose 15 mins if over 3 mins late' rule still existed on the shop floor until I left.

With being prats, they finished up losing me for months, rather than less than an hour, with the boss refusing to issue a pass-out slip to get past security for a hospital scan. I finally escaped to arrive late with sky high blood pressure by that time....hospital immediately signed me off sick for the rest of my pregnancy .

Yes, I remember the 4:33 finishes, they were also in place when I left.....

Also remember once everyone being finally sent home , when the police arrived wondering why everyone was still there working there after a coded warning at the time of the Manchester bombings, and rather than evacuating the place the charge-hands had been instructed to 'go around and look for any devices' and say nothing....work had to go on!

I keep in touch sending birthday cards to a couple of my past workmates, but won't be going to any reunions.

Passed by today, there was a big tracked machine tearing down roof trusses right where I used to work!

My life took a funny turn when I moved 5000 miles from where I was born (Stafford)

Then I took a job with Alstom
